;D Great job Tobi, I've only got some "smaller" ones up to 33in by twitching and casting some Jerkbaits and had some good follows to the boat. Finally I'd witched a nice 18in Perch. But I the season starts very slow in here.

Thx.....where have you fished, in the Bodden too? They changing weather makes the start very difficult....but with a little luck! ;-)

No, I was starting into the season here in the great flooded gravel & coal strip minig areas from shore and boat. Had a lot of lucky days within the last years in shallow areas, but not this time. Some buddies of mine were in the bodden too, but the fishing was also very difficult with only small pikes below the 30". Maybe this was caused in the excessuve longline fishery for pike with livebait what about heard last year. They caught some with broken wire leaders an single hooks coming out from their stomaches an the pikes were not in best shape. Not enough Herring, cold an long winter - who knows. Will start a silent trip next weekend with my bboat. Hope this will getting better.

I just read an article by Dr.Robert Arlinghaus (Professor of Inland Fisheries Management at Humboldt University in Berlin) and he mentioned that Pike abundance is tightly linked to healthy aquatic vegatation and if it becomes degraded the number of large Pike declines drastically. Also local angling clubs and the German Animal Welfare Act have roles in this.

Hi Steve.
Last winter I had read Roberts Book "Der unterschätzte Angler" (The underrated Angler). He wrote the same things as you american sport fishing guys practice for a long time in harvesting, stocking and C&R and suggest this to Europe to. Don't know, if its translated to english, but one chapter was dedicated so grown rate caused in fishing pressure and prey availability. He shows, that harder the fishing pressure the fish size decreased tremendous in fact. Other pints are spawning quality of small fishes and their influence of multiple genetic variety and withstanding. But I think the size thing this primary is matching to smaller areas an not to the bodden. There still are enough pikes in all sizes available.
As you know in some regions of Germany its difficult to practice C&R, caused in the "hook & cook" mentality of some "good old" sportsmen and local laws and so a lot of huge female pikes will be harvested in the pre spawn time. In the Bodden regions of the baltic sea its more and more common to release large pikes by guides an guest, but what happens when commercial fishery in setting their long lines into spawning areas for pike isn't necessary to tell. Hope sometimes this come to an end. The last resort is their high grown rate for pike in reaching app. 1 meter in 4 to 5 years, where other waters need 6 to8 years.
German Animal Welfare Act!? No comment. They got a huge lobby and in most things they're contra productive in nature things. I think a lot of activist have never left their desktop...
