Looking out side this morning and seeing snow reminded me of day in early spring a few years ago.
Roland, Paulie and I headed to a small lake we like to fish brook trout if the ice is out early enough.
The road this little lake is on is blocked off with a huge pile of snow every year. Put there to keep people like me from going to far and getting stuck in the middle of nowhere.
The snow pile was down enough for us to drive up and over it. The lake is only a mile in so if we had to walk out we could. Of course once we got out to the main road it is still 30 miles to the highway.
I have gotten stuck back in there more than once but always managed to dig myself out and make it home in time for dinner.
On the way there it clouded over and started to rain. Of course we didn't bring any rain gear so we stopped at a convenience store and bought some cheap ponchos.
My poncho lasted about an hour before the wind actually ripped it right off me. Roland and Paulie had thought to tie something around their waste so they didn't lose their poncho.
I was soaked in minutes and remained frozen for the rest of the day but the trout were so crazy that day I just couldn't leave. Not even long enough to go back to the jeep and dry off.
Not sure how many brookies we hooked and released that day but it was not stop for about 8 hours or so.
I don't usually leave my rain gear at home any more.
When I have my own car rain gear is always something I pack in the trunk along with my fishing gear. You never know and these days I like to be ready at the drop of a hat.
BTW: The trout were so close to shore I am sure I could have just sat in the jeep all day and fished right from the front seat.
