I'm thinking of getting a baitcasting outfit but it has to be a saltwater one - ie. corrosion proof (well as near as is possible). I want to be able to throw baits from about 9g (1/8oz) up to about 30g (1oz). I also intend loading the reel with braid so the rod would have to be a medium or medium/hard one. Any thoughts? I'm not overflowing with money though Nigel

Cant go wrong with a Penn internnational size 955 or 965. It will last a lifetime.

I have no saltwater fishing experience whatsoever, but, if price is the key issue, have you thought about a freshwater Muskie outfit? The strength, action, and capacity would probably be in line with what you're looking for. The only thing I don't know about is the corrosion resistance. I do know Bass Pro Shops carries a line of "Pete Maina" Musky baitcast rods & reels that are made of mostly machined aluminum, and a combo would run you around $200 bucks. I don't know if that would fit your application, but it might be worth a look.

Corrosion is the #1 issue -- saltwater is metal's worst enemy I also like to fish [relatively] light - I suppose comparative to bass fishing rather than muskie fishing. I did some more looking around and probably the best baitcasting reel would be the Daiwa CoastalThey also have a real stylish looking one: TD Zillion™ Coastal 7.3I found all this plus details [information overload ] on various saltwater rods on their saltwater inshore page. I honestly don't know what to say except that it all looks fantastic -- now all I have to do is save up loads of money........

OK. So I found something better -- the Abu Garcia Revo Inshore. It really looks like a perfect baitcasting reel for saltwater. The guys over at tackletour.com did a good in-depth review: Abu Garcia Revo Inshore reviewI must say that I am impressed -- now how does one get loads of money???

Well that was interesting -- I got the following reply from Cabela's (I must say they do have prompt customer service!): Dear Nigel; Thank you for contacting us. We will be happy to ship this combo to Israel. This item must ship International Air and the shipping fee would be $125.99 USD. If there is anything further we can help with, please feel free to contact us. Have a good day! Sincerely, Betty Wow! Are they serious? I mean $125.99 -- man that is steep I think I shall wait a bit and see how the finances are this month and perhaps asked Jeff if he needs an international customer - I'm sure his shipping prices will be better than Cabela's.....

just a question, why do you prefer a baitcasting combo for such smaller baits? i got a baitcasting combo a few days ago but it's quite heavy, so i don't think it's good for small baits. well, i don't know much about baitcasting at all!!!

sorry, i didn't understand correctly i read you got your rod in another thread, so you already started fishing... please let me know how baitcasting works The bit you don't understand? The rod is a medium heavy one and can cast baits from 1/2-1 3/8oz -- that is 14g-37g. So it is quite a versatile rod. I can cast an SP9 all the way up to an SSP12 (I think that would be the absolute max though). For saltwater fish this gives me a vast amount of lures to choose from. The rod hasn't arrived yet -- probably another 7-10 days but when it does (and the reel and PowerPro line) I will let you know how it all feels and casts. Walter, I did a quick search on YouTube and found this series on using a baitcasting rod and reel: Casting a Baitcasting Reel

I use a Academy brand reel, the H2O Mettle, it runs $49.99 usd. I been using mine in the saltwater wade fishing since last October, without any problems. It has 11 bearings and is smooth. I've had it dunked in the salt also, I havent had it serviced yet since I've had it and is still working well. You may try ebay and search for the H2o Mettles. Yes they are an Academy branded reel, but they work really well, do a search and you will see other peoples ratings and such on this reel. For me it is the best bang for the buck reel out right now for the On a budget fisherman. Just search for the reviews.
