You can thank the great state of California for this nonsense to begin with.
Your bigger worry with lead bullets is being shot with one than being 'exposed' to one LOL...
I guess that is why there are a lot more alternatives now such as tungsten, stainless steel, brass, etc...

Back when I was in the UK (a long time ago!) they started talking about banning lead shot from freshwater fishing - the reason being that if you lost some in the water, the wild fowl would pick them up along with the small stones that they swallow to aid in their digestion. This of course gives them lead poisoning.

i still have a load of lead shot, i don't use it though, i think the new stuff is made of tungsten. Nobody has ever checked what shot im using, and i have only ever had my rod licence checked twice!

I cast most of my own sinkers. Is anyone aware of an alternative material that I could melt and cast in my current do it molds? If the lead ban is enacted I guess my molds will even be worthless. Most of the sinkers I use are too big for ducks and swans to consume.

I think its a load of nonsense to be honest. I'm all for looking after nature, but this is too far i think. The chances of the swan actually picking it up, then it managing to cause any major health problems to the swan is almost 0 in my opinion. I think the EA should be concentrating more on the foreign fish theifs dredging out lakes with nets and eating all the fish. A stretch of river i used to fish at a lot (and went to last week) had a group of east european men who fished there regularly, they were always kind and polite, and every pike i saw them catch, they put back. However, the owner told us that he caught them with a load of dead pike next to the river, he phoned up some mates down at the pub, they all came along and turned over the fish theives' car. LOL Its a shame the owner had to take things in to his own hands, because the EA couldn't catch them themselves.
