Since getting my new baitcasting combo, I have been looking for suitable lures that would cast long distances. The rod can take lures between 14g - 40g (1/2 oz - 1 3/8 oz).
The problem is that Rapala don't really make much in the 30g - 40g range.
The XR-14 is 43g (1 1/2 oz), which is a little over the max lure weight for the rod but I will give it a try when the one that I bought on eBay arrives.
Yes there is the XRW-13 at 35g (1 1/4 oz) but a 'walk the dog' gets a bit tiring after a while.
So, I started looking around and bought a couple of Daiwa SP Minnnows and 3 Bomber A-Salt 146As.
Both of them outcast all the other lures that I have. The Daiwa SP Minnnow is 15cm, 32g and casts an outstanding 47m! The Bomber A-Salt 146A is also 15cm, weighs 27g and casts a very respectable 43m (actually the Rapala LC-12, although only 19g, cast a very good 42.5m).
I don't know about their fish catching potential, except for reviews and photos on the web, but I took them to our swimming pool for a workout.
The Daiwa SP Minnnow swims 0.9m (3 ft) and has a very nice tight wobble. The Bomber A-Salt 146A swims between 0.3m - 0.9m (1 ft - 3 ft) and swims similar to the LC-12 but with more of a roll, flashing it's sides.
The only issue I noticed was with the Bomber A-Salt 146A. On a very fast retrieve the lure wants to roll too much and will sometimes actually do a 360 degree roll. Like I said, I only noticed this on a very fast retrieve and on a moderate to fast retrieve it doesn't happen at all.
On a positive note because the lure swims real shallow, with short bursts of fast retrieves, it is possible to get the lure to break surface and cause a nice splash of water -- much like a fleeing baitfish and when retrieved at medium to fast speeds it will dart side to side rather than the normal tight straight line wobble and roll it has at slower speeds.
How much do these lures cost? Well the Bomber A-Salt 146A is about $6 - $7 and the Daiwa SP Minnnow around the $11 - $12 mark.
This makes the Bomber A-Salt 146A, at 15cm (6 in) a very inexpensive lure for it's size and casting abilities. Comparing it to a Husky Jerk 14, that can be had on eBay for a similar price, the Husky Jerk just doesn't cast well at all.
