The winter in Nebraska has been very mild to say the least and I'm wondering what if anything that means for the spawn. Water temps are 35 to 40 so far. Should I use that as my gauge, if so what temps should I look for. Last year I missed the boat completely. If any of you guys or girls have any advise that would be fantastic. Also I have heard that female Walleyes move to rocks for the spawn, true or false? Thanks for the help!!

Walleyes will spawn in water temps from 42 to 48 degrees. The spawn is also very dependent on the length of the day. Before that they stage in traditional spawning areas - rock/gravel substrate - clam beds. Areas will depend on what type of body of water. Your local fisheries biologist should be able to tell you what to look for - or specifically where to look.
The females will move to the rocks but they need to be the right rocks - with enough oxygen (current or wind driven) to assist in the spawn. Sometimes walleyes spawn in marshes and/or flooded vegetation - again - it depends on the system.
The females will leave shortly after spawning - but the males will remain, they are the ones you want to keep anyway - in order to protect the resource. Doesn't hurt to keep a trophy/larger female every now and then - the 18 to 24 inch females are the most important to protect and put back.
Best of luck.

I'll call are game parks people and see what they say. Most of the local spots are man made reservoirs most people say to fish the dams on those waters.

This is nuts.

Some fish will spawn earlier than the others - but for the most part - the walleye and sauger we have been catching still have eggs in them. I spoke with a friend who has a degree in fisheries biology and he calculates that the major walleye spawn will occur on April 6th - which I believe is the full moon.
