Does anyone purchase used lures either from other fisherman or via ebay and then clean them up and use them for fishing? Its something that I have been doing for a while now and I really enjoy it. Most of the time is just a good washing and new split rings and hooks. But I have also done some loose bill repair, and made some x-rap treble hooks with some fly material.

well, like all of you (well, almost all) i am the one who wants his rapala for the collection NIB, perfect condition, no price tags, etc. but sometimes, it just is not as perfect as this.
so i not only buy used rapala to fish with, sometimes, i buy used rapala for the collection, and i know a few of you who also do this.
for instance, i have used F-18 SD and RH, i have a used H-13 GFR in old-style, F-18 size box; although, i found one of these later on NIB, at a very nice price too. i have MFR-3 B pearl and RH as used ones; i would take a RCL mini fat rap used, if i found one, or RR-4, and so on.
most of my gold belly perch collection started out with used ones, many i could replace with NIB, and some i still miss, and would be happy to have a good used one.
so yes, why not buy used rapala, fish them or collect them, its all up to you.
best, wolfgang

Rightnow Love the paint job. I have a few lures that could stand a coat of paint but thats not something I think I will tackle. I have a hard enough time dealing with a paintbrush or spray can on large areas. Its amazing how well some lures clean up. GOJO on a wet lure with just light pressure is my favorite method for removing hard rust or soil stains. Its got some grit but wont damage the lure if you are carefull with it.

This is something I've been seriously looking at, rapala's over here are 15-20 dollars for common run of the mill F-7's/CD-5's, so certainly if I can get cheap used lures, I'm happy to buy them for use. I can understand why we were paying so much when our Australian Dollar was low (worth around 60c US) up until the GFC, but since its turned to be on partity/slightly more than a USD, but we still pay the same.

It's a great option I jest spent 36 dollars and got as follows all in great or unfished 2 risto raps hot mustard size 5 A #7 gold rattling fat rap 3 ssr-8 perch silver and fire tiger first gen #7 clown skitter pop So about 5 dollars each I put new hooks on with split rings costs me .60 per lure. You often don't need new hooks but I want then as clean as possible before I put them in my tackle box.

I guess the saying "One man's trash is another man's treasure." would apply here! I get a good portion of my Rapalas off eBay; and if you hit it just right...you can come up with some incredible bargains with either new or used ones! This is just part of the fun, and the rest is restoring some of the junkers you may wind up with. Just because it doesn't look like new doesn't mean its ineffective.
To cite an example; last year I acquired off eBay a #8 Husky Jerk in clown finish. The hooks and split rings were very good, but the lure finish was very badly faded!!! This was right around the time that Rapala was promoting the "Ike's Ink" series of lures. Mike Iaconelli had explained that to get a faded look such as the one on my Husky Jerk, he would put lures on window sills and/or vehicle dashboards and leave them there for weeks or months (if necessary).
Why would he do that?
Mike fishes major tournaments, and he realizes that in all probability, the use of a lure with a discoloration in finish COULD very well result in a paycheck in the 5 - or - 6 digits.
So I bought off eBay, with no more than a click of a button... a lure that Iaconelli would age for weeks or months, just to get the same faded finish. Enough said.
Many of the most effective Rapalas I've fished are used ones I've bought off eBay. Plus, I get to try different Rapala styles and colors that I ordinarily wouldn't have at all. And this, so far, has made a pretty big difference.

i never looked at it this way, but it makes perfect sense. usually i would try to get cheap used ones for repaint, but why not try them right off. and i am planning this seasoning thing (or i would call it UV light exposure) for a long time, seems to work, i know it will make a FT blue and a CG white ... best, wolfgang
