I don't know how many others are trying these little guys out but within the first few outings the ultralight shad has become easily my best, favorite, and go-to lure for fishing trout in steams and moderate-sized rivers. I almost always just leave an ultralight of one finish or another on my best rod and then have a small jig on another for fishing the deeper pools. If I bother to bring another rod it is usually set up with a spinner or a small countdown or, when bait is permitted, a dropshot style rig. I almost always just leave the fly rod at home now!
On some of my first trips with the ultralight shads I would thoroughly work the likely pools over with flies, spinners and spoons and usually could catch a few but often I would get no response to any of the typical trout lures. That could be because of the moderately heavy fishing pressure here but then there were many times that after working these pools vigorously I would catch a fish or at least get a fish to follow on literally the FIRST cast with an ultralight. I now fish the ultralight shad almost exclusively and this allows me to fish pools quickly and effectively and ultimately catch more fish. It has frequently made the difference between an enjoyable fishing trip and a REALLY SLOW, scenic walk along the shores of a river.
I've caught rainbows, cutthroats, brookies, browns, and the occasional whitefish on this lure and in at least seven different bodies of water. Small pike wont say no either which has led to a number of close calls and lost lures
All this to say that I would, and do, HIGHLY recommend this lure to trout and perch (or other small predatory gamefish) fishermen of all experience levels as it is simple and effective to use.
