Hi folks, new to this type of fishing and need a few pointers in the right direction.
i want to fish with lures such as the Rapala minnows 3-5 gram so weight on an LRF set up mainly for small predators like perch and would like to know how to tie on so the lure fishes correctly so the presentation is good in the water. There are pike present so I need to use a wire trace.
What line and knots are recommended, use of snap links etc. All help is appreciated.
thanks. Hutch.

hello IMHO: 1)if you need to use a wire leader, use at least a 7 cm lure, else it will kill the balance and movement of your lure (except for 5 cm shad rap, fat rap and similar ones, which can stand the leader due to the different shape). if you really need to use 3 - 5 cm lures, you'll need to look for some steel wires specifically designed for light tackle. 2)make sure your wire leader has the snap on one side and the barrel on the other, so you don't need to prepare it 3)to connect your line to the leader i recommend using a palomar knot or a figure 8 loop. the figure 8 loop allows for easily substituting the wire leader with a simple snap. do not use an overhand loop because it can move, damaging your line, and also has a much greater strength loss thas a figure 8 loop (especially with braided lines, overhand loops are well known to reduce the tensile strenght). the palomar knot, on the other hand, has a great resistance and "locks" itself into position, if you don't need to change your leader it can be a good idea. always leave a couple of cm of line when cutting, and wet yout line before tying a knot. both the figure 8 loop and the palomar knot are easy and really effective. choose the one you prefer.

Hi.
well, as Walter said, ultra light and pike do not match really well. I do not have that much experience with UL, but I have used MFR-3 in water where pike was possible. and I have used 2.4 kg (about 5lbs) breaking strain multi-strand steel wire leaders. attached the lure with small crimp sleeves and loop, which takes some time but is the only way I can imagine to have a save rig which does not hamper the lure action too much.
best, Wolfgang
