Just found out we're spending the weekend at my friend's trailer somewhere in PA, and Lake Wallenpaupack is nearby. Thank god for wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_WallenpaupackI was told, "you dont even have to bring anything, my uncle has all that stuff..." Problem is, I need to travel light - how the hell am I going to reduce my rapalas to 'travel size'? Better get started now I guess....

I swear, it's been EVERY weekend...storms run through Friday or Saturday night... but ALWAYS the night before I go fishing...this is the 5th or 6th time already.... Good lake pics though but yeah, I really need a day on the lake with a stagnant front and a good amount of cloud cover...

wish i had problems like that, everytime i do get a chance to go, the wife has to work and i have to watch the kid, or the wheat is ready for harvest, or theres a whole crap load of yard work to get done, ect... i have caught a fish in the last two months, ONE! stole a pole from my father in laws boat while at the family reunion.(im only married into the family, so i guess that ment that i had to spend the whole time at the grill cook all the food, not fishing or playing around with everyone else) and was able to walk over the the water and pull up a quick 2lb bass on a skitter walk. so thats it. i got to fish for 20 minutes, and caught one fish. even when i got to go camping on the mississippi river, i never even got to wet a line. i need a vacation, a real just fishing vacation. bacon

im already up early, if it wasnt for my 11 month old bouncing around my ancles right now, i might be able to sneak out at first light, or get a few casts in at dark, but he needs me too. right now isnt too bad, in a month and a half though, all hell will break loose and i will be working 12-15+ hour days again and there will be NO free time at ALL. Harvest starts tomorrow, but its only a week and a half of wheat to deal with, the real harvest season will start the back half of Aug. our little piss hole lakes near my house are junk, both have suffered some serious freeze out in the last few years, just like my little honey hole farm pond. no decent fish, water is way low, cant even get my boat into 2/3 landings. one of my best friends from school, went into the navy and we had lost touch, calls me the other day, we had a great chat. he grew up on a cranberry marsh, they had a huge pond(more of a series of channels and pools, really) that was phenomenal for fishing. he hasnt been back to take me out there in over 5 years, but only a few have touched it since. his brother pulled a 45 inch pike and a 19 yes 19 inch black crappie. WI state record is 19.75 inch. it might have been a record depending on weight, and he let it go. if i do go fishing, i might have to put on the ninja suit and sneak in there and do some real fishing again. i wish matt would come home so we could fish there again. but hes in for another 10 years, who knows if he will ever come back here. there was a spot out there on the 'res' that was one of the most unusual fishing spots i have ever fished. a ditched area of a swamp, not even really part of the bogs surface water, but right across the drive. it wasnt 2 feet deep and 5 feet wide, but toss out a sassy shad, and pretty much only a sassy shad, and bingo, small bass, everytime. not that unusual, but these little bass, there build was unique, every 4-5 inch largemought looked like it was a mini world record. you've all seen photos of the oversized bass in CA, the 20+lb freaks. the big potbellies and too-large mouths, almost as tall as they are long. that was those little bass, somewhere there are a few pictures of us pretending that they were huge, trick photography. wonder what happened to them when the water has slipped down in the last few years. one of those neat little things that just happened there i guess. the pike fising in the res is unheard of, at times its every cast with an average size of fish in the 8lb range, lots of 4-6's, and then a few 10-12lb-ers. fish for an afternoon and catch 50-100 fish, you get tired of unhooking fish sometimes and give up for a game of catch or a little snipe hunting. good lord, the memories that come back with just a simple phone call. so gladto be back in contact with him. a navy sea bee (cb) that spent some time with the 7th marines as a relief sniper in Bagdad. hes one of the best rifle shot i have ever hunted with. a lot of marines owe this seaman there lives, and i owe a lot of marines a drink for keeping my buddy here too. i know its a long post that rambles off topic, but as i type this one handed and feed my son with the other, i am still just bubbling over abit from happiness and nostalga. heres too good old fishin buddies bacon

Remember when I wasn't here for months at a time? That long hiatus I had taken was probably one of the more trying times of my life. When the 2nd baby came and the only wasn't even 2 yet, it was the worst. Sold my boat, and sold of my Rapala collection. But now that they are 4 & 6, they are much easier (in some ways) for just one of us to handle. Which has basically freed me up to do a lot more fishing. Wait until the wife starts asking about having #2....

Hmm, I certainly feel your pain lads... My son is 13 now...he even likes to row so Dad can fish and even have a nap sometimes. Oh, how sweet it is!! Yet I certainly do remember a time when the fishing gear sat dry for a few years in a row while we changed diapers, and gave Mom some much needed breaks. Hang in there guys, it gets absolutely fabulous as time goes on. I fish at least twice a week, then again, the sun doesn't set here until 11PM, and the kid tags along so we can philosophize about the world as we go through cast after cast. There's even nights where Mama comes too and we all enjoy a little breather from the daily nuisances. Tomorrow we're off for a family field trip to Bass Pro Shops just outside of Calgary...it's a long drive (about 150 miles or so) but it's been too hot to fish here this week, so we're cranking up the a/c and hitting the road. Yes, I said too hot...can you believe it? 95 degrees in the Foothills of the Rockies?!?! It's INSANE for this area!! Luckily it only lasts a couple of weeks and we should be back down to the low 70's and high 60's by the beginning of August...then snow in September...right on schedule. Fishing in the rain? Absolutely!! heck, we even fish when it's snowing here...as long as the water is liquid, and we get a lure to plow through it, we put on the parkas and toques and head to the lake. The fishing action here in late October is AWESOME...ok, so it's just below freezing, but when it's snowing the fish go nuts...they realize it's only a short time left before the ice is on so they hit anything that moves...! Oh, and Ted, noticing your plethora of lures that you have , I'm having a hard time feeling bad for you!!
