Damn treble hooks...As I was fetching a bass out of the water today, with a F13 in its mouth, of course most of the hooks were located in his lower jaw - So carefully I tried to grab him, and of course that's when they shake the most, and the damn treble went right in my thumb, by the knuckle. Normally its no big deal, I get stabbed several times each time I go fishing, but this one really effin hurt. I think this one hit bone. Now my thumb is starting to get swollen...should be concerned? Can't remember the last tetanus shot I had...

Hi Ted.
i wouldnt worry that much about tetanus.
but you should be concerned indeed, especially if you really hit the bone. first of all, dont move your arm, yes, the arm, for at least 2 days. this includes typing on the PC!
i had a little saw blade cut some years agon on my left index finger. i watched the surgeon while cleaning and sewing it, so i was sure there was not dirt left. went back to work and after a day or 2 only by typing a little bit at the PC the whole hand started to swell.
my boss saw this and sent me off immediately to the emergency surgeon (just around the corner from where i was working) and this guy opened the wound, even when i told him i am sure there is no dirt in there.
after that, he said, i was right, its clean; maybe i was moving the hand too much? i told him i was using the PC a little with my other fingers ... oh, he said, we will fix that; and he put a splint on my left arm. the first night was terrible, but after that all went well.
if the swelling (and pain) goes back while keeping calm, you dont have to worry; if the swelling gets more even while you dont move, see a physician.
all the best, wolfgang

I think every fisherman gets punctured a couple of times each year, some deeper than others. I dont go for a tetanus shot normally, but keep a close eye on the wound for redness. When I first get home I spray it with disinfectant or hydrogen-peroxide and then a bandage for cover.

But the part about me not moving it or doing computer work, well, that simply isnt going to happen. Unless it gets so swollen that I cannot do anything anymore; after all it is my 'mouse' hand. Usually 36-48 hours afterwards will tell the tale of how it is. Its still red around the injury, but hasn't spread any. Thanks for the info W

Well the swelling went down and its no longer red. Looks like they wont have to amputate and sadly it looks like I'll be working this week

Almost got "fishooked" yesterday.Had a fish right up to the boat and the DTFAT01 came flying out and tagged me in the hand. The hook drew blood but didn't stick. That DTFAT01 is a big hunk of wood to get hit with

Have any of you guys ever had to go to the hospital to get fish hooks out of them? About 2 winters ago in Florida I was ladyfish fishing, and I caught a really slippery one. I tried to grab it out of the water, and it shook out of my hang and the x-rap in it's mouth hooked me deep in my middle finger About a year later I was fishing in the river by my house, and I had a lure get snagged on a log. I yanked my pole to free the lure, and it worked, but the bad thing is that it flung right back at me, and into my nose. Hahahaha, I walked into the emergency room with a shad rap hanging from my nose.

Hahahaha, unfortunately I didn't have a camera at the time When I walked into the ER the people at the front desk actually laughed, but I did too, so it was all right
