Few things in life can be as appreciated as being able to fish a mountain lake on a weeknight....yesiree, I didn't expect to get out there tonight, but mysteriously my schedule cleared and by 7PM I was in my waders and chasing rainbow trout. Being on a bit of a fly kick these days and trying all kinds of new patterns, I left the hardware at home...BIG mistake!! They were feeding on minnows like crazy.. Who knows, if I was this lucky this early in the week, maybe I'll be able to sneak out again by the end of the week. Hopefully by then the resident loon (bird, not crazy person) will move on to the other end of the lake....while I was fishing away all nice and relaxed, he surfaced about ten feet from where I was standing! Scared the crap out of me!

Even though the fish didn't cooperate sounds like a place I would like to be regardless if the fish were biting or not. ;D I haven't seen a loon in years. Some of the smaller lakes here where I live have a couple pairs. There is nothing like hearing them sound off in the early morning.

I have to agree with you there muskiehunter...there's many times when we go to the lake and almost forget to fish. Last night my kid came with me, but didn't feel like fishing, so he pulled up a lawn chair and just watched the animal action...there was a young osprey at the North end of the lake honing his diving skills, there's three mating pairs of geese just around the corner from the point and they're always good for a giggle as they try and keep the young ones in line.
We were fortunate last night as there weren't many people, yet there were also no bears. That can put a damper on a mellow night out in no time! It was nice to just stand in the water and make lazy circles in the sky with my fly line...the surface of the water was like glass, so the fly would just drop gently on the top of the water, and soon after, a little trout would jump out and try to nail it. Sometimes they get it, sometimes they miss by a mile...Sometimes, I'm not fast enough to set the hook...it's quite a dance out there.
At least when you're packing hardware, a.k.a., floating, 3cm, Rainbow Rap, you're eating for sure. Last night was more like fencing than fishing...but oh so absolutely relaxing...ahhhhhhhhhh.

Hopefully by then the resident loon (bird, not crazy person) I literally laughed out loud at work when I read that

Always happy to supply a chuckle....I just wanted to illustrate that point as the resident village loon (person, not the bird) is seldom at the lake...
