EDIT: it looks like photos (hosted on imageshack) aren't displayed correctly. i'm sorry, i'm still trying to understand how this forum works
thursday evening, since i had a new rod and reel to try, i decided to take my bike and go fishing. well, 8 miles with a rod holder in a windy day aren't so easy, but i managed to arrive and start fishing.
the rod is a 8 ft for light crankbait (about 1/4 - 1 1/2) one, with a 4000 size spinning reel. the line you can see here is 4 lbs trilene ironsilk. i used a small (#1) spinner.
after a few casts, i get this one, 33 cm (about 13")
a smaller one
another 33
another small
and a little surprise, a rudd...
now, it's late, but i still want another chub. and, after many other casts, i get a great hit on the rod
the sun is going down, and i have one of my crazy ideas. i change the spool, this one has a 8 lbs (0.25 mm, 1/100") on. i prepare also a small steel leader and a #2 spinner.
i take my bike, go back about half a mile, where i caught my first wels catfish, and start casting. with that light tackle, it's just madness. but i'm crazy enough, so it's ok!!!
after a few casts, i have a strong hit on my rod... i start the fight, and after a few minutes i take this into my landing net
it's 60 cm, something less than 2 ft. really nice fish, and a good fighter too.
then, the next cast in the dark, i snag on the weeds. i can save my lure, but i get a huge backlash. i lose about half a hour cutting line, trying to take it away from the reel, making knots etc.
i restart fishing, lose a couple of fishes, and see that there are some small ones around. i want one.
after a few casts, i have another hit on my rod... it looks like the other one, i am slowly cranking this one, when suddenly it goes away with an incredible sprint. it takes me 10 m of line, but i manage to keep it. now it has started fighting, and fights really hard. when i think he's tired, i take it under me, i put down my landing net... and the fish, with his tail, washes me and then restarts.
after about 30 minutes of fight, i finally manage to crank the fish near me. i discover that it doesn't fit into my landing net, and it's not funny. so i have to hold the rod with one hand, put a glove on the other one, and do the "gloving" on the fish. a hand in his mouth, and finally the fish is out of water. it's 10.45 pm (gmt+1)
i take the catfish on the bank, for misuration and photo
well, this is huge. this is 93 cm, more than one yard.
since i have weak wrists (i had a bike accident some years ago), fighting this one on that tackle has been quite painful...
and this is how my spinner looked after this fish. i'll have to fix it, or maybe change the hook.
i phone home and tell that i'm late  then i pack everything, take my bike, and return slowly home.
