I hit one of my usual parks Monday. I was playing with a DTFAT3 S most of the time at one pond until I saw a large school of alewives swimming around. I right away said to myself, Shallow Shad Rap Time!!! I took out a SSR7 SH and stuck with it as I worked my way around the pond I was fishing. When I got to a cove I always like to fish I was casting the SSR and saw a chain pickerel come out of nowhere and grab the lure hard. Gave me a nice fight on 8 pound line. New personal best 20" 3 pound chain pickerel As I continued fishing more ponds I caught a small 13" largemouth with lightly twitching a F5 S on the surface around weeds. Had many other hits on the surface while doing that. That was it for the day. I'd consider that pickerel a payback for the bass I lost at the golf course. And there we go again. The Shallow Shad Rap catches me another personal best.

How big do pickerel get? We do not have them here, so I have had no dealings with them. Thanks.

Nice job! When I bass aren't biting I usually hope that the pickerel will. I lost a monster this weekend too, he was easily 4-5 pounds... I wonder what the state record is for NJ...

Just a question, but will pickerel go after Super Shad Raps just like smaller pike do?

I have never tried a SSR for pickeral but they will generally hit anything that moves. They sure like silver jointed raps.

Just a question, but will pickerel go after Super Shad Raps just like smaller pike do? I'm sure pickerel will go after a Super Shad Rap. Pickerel from I'd say from 2 pounds and up would like it just like pike do.

I've even had guys tell me that they'd consider chain pickerel your freshwater bluefish. Earlier this year I was fishing the same pond I caught this one at. Decided to take a SRRS-4 SD and do a HJ retrieve right by some weeds along the side. Out of nowhere saw a pickerel come shooting out and grab that lure hard.

Just a question, but will pickerel go after Super Shad Raps just like smaller pike do? I caught one on a Bagley Monster Shad, so I'd have to go with yes. There are some big bastards in my lake, my version of northern pike fishing! Or freshwater bonefish
