yesterday afternoon i took my bike, a rod (another one to try, 8 ft, quite stiff, about 3/8 - 1 1/2 oz) and went fishing. it was very windy and cloudy, i arrived there after 45 minutes. i started with a 4 lbs line on my reel about 15 minutes after, i got my first fish, a 11" (28 cm) chub after 15 more minutes, i got a strong hit, and caught this about 15" (38 cm) then i lost a bass and a couple of chubs. the weather got better, wind stopped and the sky was clear. but it was the sunset, so i decided to go for some wels catfishes. i put on 8 lbs line. well, i started fishing... and lost 7-8 minutes fighting against a snag, since i wasn't able to recognize if it was a snag or a fish!!! i felt really st*pid. suddenly, i heard a noise in the dark. wels catfishes have a very particular attack, so i recognized what it was, and where it was. i launched there, got a hit... a great water explosion, but the fish didn't got hooked. it was about 20" (50 cm). i saw him returning back to his place, and thought i could manage it easily with my tackle... i thought. another one or two casts... and something hit my lure. and i understood that it wasn't that fish... and i just couldn't manage this one. the drag started singing... well, at least it has a really nice sound. after 45 minutes of fight, i was able to get him to the shore. i put my glove, and tried to get it out of the water, but it was too heavy (i have weak wrists and hands). somehow, i got him out with me. i recognized him from the fin, it is the biggest fish in this part of the channel. i started measuring it... 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110... 113 cm. that's about 44". my first over metre fish the head of the fish and my shoe to compare... i released it and returned home... quite destroyed, but happy

Hey Walter you didn't mention which 'lure' you were using to catch the catfish. We to have well's catfish here in Israel and the guys usually use chicken livers or chopped up innards of something long dead. I would be interested in knowing what the lure was as I would love to catch a catfish or 2 or 3 on a Rapala Anybody else use Rapalas purposely for catfish? Nigel

Ted, no fish have graced the inside of the new boat yet. I have been installing a few things like a fwd casting deck, seats, fish finder, rod holder, bilge pump, radio and cd player. Will post a pic shortly for comparison to the 1st one. We are using my buddies boat for the muskie outing this weekend and the bass championships next weekend

Nigel Anytime I caught a catfish on something artificial, it was always an accident. I never expected to catch those things on something moving. Then again I never realized how aggressive they can be.

@ nigel: i caught it on a #2 spinner. wels catfishes are quite likely to be caught with lures, it is not rare to catch them with rapalas. shad raps, jointed, magnum, original etc work well. also, spinners, spoons, jig heads and poppers are known to work well (a wels catfish, even if small, attacking a popper or a topwater lure is really spectacular!!!) just use adequate tackle (don't follow me, i'm crazy!!! ) and a steel or kevlar leader. adter you catch it, check the last 5 mt of line. quite likely you will have to cut and retie, since catfishes usually tend to fight in the deep, looking for obstacles. do you have "aristotelis" or "glanis" type of wels there? here we have only "glanis"

It grows to about 150 cm. and puts up one heck of a fight! The largest I caught was 4.8 Kg and I'm looking to catch more. I was thinking of using a Clackin' Rap as I've read that catfish 'hear' very well and can feel vibrations just as good. All I need now is to get a Clackin' Rap - our tackle shops don't stock them I actually found a SP7 Skitter Pop in a local outdoor/camping store - so perhaps that might work a treat Blessings, Nigel

i don't know if the "clarias" likes poppers... i think you could try with a spinner, they are cheap and can be heard well.

This is also the first time I ever heard of catching catfish on a surface lure. Learn something new every day!!! it depends on the species. wels catfish at the sunset usually get to the surface. and their attacks, in the dark, are simply spectacular. I'm still trying to figure out what 'disco inferno' has to do with any of this.... well, i'm just crazy... in italian forums i use even worse titles (i thought this title while fighting that cat, since at a certain moment he started pulling in a strange, non-linear way, and the drag started doing his noise... and it sounded like the start of "disco inferno" ok, i'm really crazy ) Well, if it was to get our attendtion to read the thread, it worked! So is there a prize for the most original/creative Subject line? it would be a great competition... but i can't imagine the results!!!

This is also the first time I ever heard of catching catfish on a surface lure. Learn something new every day!!! it depends on the species. wels catfish at the sunset usually get to the surface. and their attacks, in the dark, are simply spectacular. 3 years ago we took a group of children on a nature hike through one of the streams feeding the Sea of Galilee. Most of the time the stream was shallow and narrow, through overgrown brush and trees (it was fun!) but then every so often the stream would open out into a large pool of about perhaps 6 meters by 20 meters and quite deep. In one of these pools I noticed a catfish in the shallows in the shade of the overgrowth on the far side of where we were. On the opposite 'bank' the Nature Reserve folks had made some concrete steps for those that wanted to do the 'short trail'. The children sat down there to eat their snacks. One of the kids threw a crust of bread into the water; others soon followed as we all saw about 15 - 20 nice sized (just over a meter) catfish feeding on the floating food. During this we and some of the older kids were still in the water and had fun trying to catch the catfish with our hands - not possible - those things are slippery! Anyway it was fun and definitely something to remember. As it was a nature park -- NO FISHING This was mid-day. Nigel
