Last night mt little brother shot a Black Bear with his bow and called me to help him find it. It was a small bear around 250 pounds, but that damn thing ran about 80 yards into the nastiest junk I have ever seen in the bush .How that thing ran threw that stuff amazes me.A few times we had to crawl underneath windfalls to stay on the trail which was the easy part. Once we found it we had to drag it back threw that shit.It took us about 2 hours to get it out of the woods. And was I wrecked by the time we got back.I haven't got my ass kicked like that in a looong time I was too sore and tired to get outta bed this morning to go fishing with my Dad who just laughed at me and said" getting old sucks hey" If there are any other hunters here I tell ya those Rage broadheads are awesome!!!!!!!!

Haha, sounds like a fun time. We don't have very many bears here in Ohio, and I think hunting them would be out of the question. Bear hunting with a bow sounds scary to me, I would probably miss, and the thing would come after me. How many bears are you allowed to kill up in Michigan?

That reminds me of a blonde Joke...... OK then here it is: Two blondes were dragging a well endowed deer that they had shot back to their pickup. Trouble was the antlers were digging into the ground and making the going very difficult. A fellow hunter was watching this and decided to help them with some common sense advice: "Hey gals - if you were to drag the deer the other way the antlers wouldn't dig into the ground." After about 20 minutes one blonde turns to the other and says "That guy was right, this sure is much easier." The other blonde replies "Yeh, but were getting further from the pickup."

Hey Steve, I feel your pain. My grandpa owns a deer ranch around Baldwin and some of those deer weigh well over the 300lb mark and they know where its going to be nasty too. At least with a deer, you have the rack to grab a hold of to drag him out. I have always wanted to bear hunt with a bow but never had the opportunity. I hear that there is some pretty good bear hunting in parts of the UP. Well, congrats to your brother on the bear. At least you stuck with it and found the thing and at least it wasn't 400+lbs!! That would have really sucked!

Canada is probably the best spot for bear hunting IMO. If you ever want to hunt them up here your more then welcome to stay at my house. He shot it on state land which was cool.

Hey Nate, You can only kill one per year, but you can't get a license every year though. It is kinda like a drawing to get one.If you don't get one you get a points towards another one. Unless you have a bear with a really bad attitude or a sow with cubs they won't bother you. They are more afraid of you then you are of them. When my brother stuck this one he said "holy shit did that thing let out a growl when the arrow hit him. Bowhunting is a rush no matter what your hunting ;D

We have moose to shoot up here but we don't drag them out of the woods by hand. We always go and get draft horses to pull them out. Two draft horses can easily pull a 1000 pound moose through the forest. I've seen it done for a 982 pound moose that was field dressed after the horses dragged it a mile through the woods. Don't think I would find much enjoyment dragging a fat and round 250 pound bear through the thick stuff.

Where do you live Shane? Ya I wouldn't want to drag a moose if it was even possible. With those monsters you either have to quarter them where they lay or use a method like you mentioned.

I might just have to take you up on that one of these days. I do agree with you that Canada is better than the UP. Plus, in Canada, you might get lucky enough to take a color phase bear. IMO that would be pretty sweet!! A large moose would be cool to hunt with a bow. I have always wanted to shoot an elk, moose, and grizzly bear with my bow. That would really be a rush!!

Hey Walleye, If you're into bowhunting that stuff, it's about ten minutes from my house! hee!hee! We're in the Alberta foothills of the Rockies. This is it baby, 'big game central'. Now, 250 lb bears? No offense Muskie, those are the cubs here. I agree..even a 250lb bear is brutal to haul through the underbrush..would I do it? NO WAY!! We have another nasty thing here called muskeg...kind of like a swampy peat bog. The animals try to get to those when they're shot. Drop a 1500lb moose in one of those things and you've got yourself a two day project. A 500lb. bear, equally as bad. This is winch country..*grin* I have a couple of buddies here that are outfitters. Coral Creek outfitters is up by Cline River and the Wilson Icefields..lots of bighorn sheep, cougars, moose, etc,etc..Rugged Outfitting runs a little closer to here and is big for whitetails, moose, bear, and elk. Unfortunately, if you're not a resident, you have to book with an outfitter, and it ain't cheap. A whitetail tag for me is 25 bucks, and there's supplemental tags if I want to fill the freezer. Outsiders only get one, period. Here, whitetails are almost considered pests...too many of them. Bears on the other hand, is a dangerous, dangerous business. There's currently a moratorium on grizzly hunting while they try and figure out exactly how many are left. In the meantime, they kill livestock, trash buildings, etc,etc..that's not doing much for their numbers. Bears like that 'disappear'. Black bears are hunted but alot of us local guys don't like eating them...they're greasy, and labor intensive. Deer on the other hand, tend to drop on dry land, or in pastures so it's easy work. Moose are really good eating, but man what a job! Congrats to your brother Steve!! Takes ALOT of guts to go after a bear with a bow...none of us would!

Hey Zero, No offense taken here.Every thing in Canada is bigger I think the deer come out of the womb weighing 200 pounds, sporting 10pts and a 20" spread. Bears are the same way minus the antlers.

hahaha!!! 200lb fawns... ;D I must say this year has been a little off. I haven't seen any really monstrous deer around. There's one really nice buck hanging out on my in-laws' farm, but they don't want anybody hunting it, so there it is, getting old, getting bigger...along with its entourage of does and youngsters. My mother-in-law complains about the deer eating her garden away in the summer, we offer to fix the problem, and back we go in circles... As impressive as it all sounds up here, believe me, a 500 lb. bear is not really something you WANT to see. I like hearing about them, or seeing one far up the side of a hill (like when we went to Banff in July), but to be within 'running range'...NO WAY!!! Same goes for the moose and such. Some of the bulls are well up and above 1500 lbs. They're alot more timid than the bears, but when they get in a mood, well, again, hit the gas and get outta there. So, for hunting it's awesome, for fishing? Not so great...you have to bring a buddy and always be checking the bush for a big critter. The moose don't want your fish, the bears do...and they'll fight you for it...the cougars and wolves just want you, period. We've really curbed our outdoor activities here in the last couple of years. As more and more people move out from the city and bring their cute little pets (a.k.a. 'bait') the predators have widened their menu selections to include said pets, livestock, and the people who tend them. Encounters are rare, but also rarely end up with the person winning. These big animals kill for a living....they're good at it! So, when possible we fish from a boat, if not possible we try and stick to open stretches of lake shore, when river fishing, be very, very careful, stay well away from bushy areas, and if you see deer, there's bigger, so be careful. A grizz can go from 0-30mph right now, so if one comes out, you're done. Period. The joys of life in the boonies....
