On Friday a buddy and I hit a pond looking for crappie, perch, and trout. We spent the afternoon on his canoe there doing some trolling, casting, and throwing bait. In one area where we've had luck my buddy had no luck with live killies as bait. My buddy tried trolling around the area with a special trout lure and also a SSR-7 S with no luck. I tried trolling with a SSR-5 SD and a SSR-7 SH with no luck. I gave a J-7 S and F-7 B a few tries but no luck. Later we moved on to another area where we've had luck. That's where my buddy caught a brown trout and a yellow perch both on a killy. He wasn't having any luck with a Vibrax or with his special trout spoon. I told him to switch over to a F-5 G he had with him and that did the trick. He caught another brown with that Rapala. I gave up on the SSR and started throwing a J-7 S out there. I had 3 trout come splashing up for the lure while doing a very slow retrieve right beneath the surface. I also lost one. Nothing else was happening for us later so we moved on to another good spot. My buddy hit it again there with a brown trout on the F-5 and a perch on a killy. That's when I finally caught brown on the J-7. My buddy had a big brown come flying out of the water when it come up to grab his F. We called it a day around 5:30pm.
Saturday I went back to that same pond with another guy I know. This time we worked the shore. I got started with a nice 13" rainbow on that same J-7 S that was working for me on Friday. I also had a trout come right out of the water for the lure. My buddy wasn't having any luck with a 1/16oz trout and panfish jig or a Mepps Aglia. As we moved along and were having no luck we came to one of the spots that was producing for my other buddy and me on Friday. I told the guy to use my F-7 B. Right as he started throwing that lure out there he was into it. With that F-7 he caught an 11" brown and a nice 13.5" brown just over a pound. He got 2 explosions on that lure and missed out on 1 trout with a Little Cleo. He also caught an 8" yellow perch with the 1/16oz jig he was throwing earlier. Surprisingly I wasn't having any luck with the J-7 and didn't get a single hit on the surface while throwing an Ajusta Bubble with 2 different flies. Once it slowed down completely for my buddy we moved on to a cove that holds largemouths. First cast out there for me and I catch a nice 1 1/2 pounder
My buddy then catches a 7"er on the F-7. We kept on moving on along the water. At one spot my buddy caught a nice 10" crappie with the F-7. I was twitching the J-7 on the surface right along weeds and had what I thought was just a bluegill tapping it on the surface. Once my buddy caught the crappie and I had no luck twitching we kept on working our way along the pond but had no more luck and totally died once it started to drizzle.
