I don't fillet many fish ...but are the electric ones any good? IMO they are a waste of money. If you good with a fillet knife there is no need for one.

I think some guys here on board are very experienced to fillet fish. Perhaps someone can post a small picture series with little describing. I know Andy is very very good in these things, his fillets are very effectively and the loss is minimized. But he is cut off from the outside world....

How about this: How To Fillet FishYou will need to click on the 'How To Fillet Fish' entry (you will need to move the slider, under the lures, to the right to get to the 'How To Fillet Fish' icon). I use the in fisherman electric fillet (the best in my opinion). Make sure you get the corded variety because the battery operated ones just don't have the power. I cut my filleting time down significantly with the electric and it is a surprisingly delicate tool. It's the only way I will fillet a bucket of perch now. If I only have one or two fish, I would go with the knife because its easier to "setup" and clean than the electric but for 200 perch, crappie, sunfish, etc..., the Electric is the only way to go. If I had one of those hat cams I could make a little video of filleting with the electric versus hand and I think the difference would be noticeable and this is coming from someone who has hand filleted for decades and only used an electric for two years.

I prefer a simple manual Rapala filet knife. BTW: Here is a simple and fast manual for perch. Sorry, its in german language, but hey - we're clever! 1st: One lightly slice beside the two dorsal fins on the back. 2nd: Lift the skin with a finger and the hand around the fish. 3nd: hold the perch tight and strip off the skin from the body including almost any fins. 4th: lift the 2nd dorsal fin with a knife and pull the two fins in head direction out. 5th: now you can cut the fillets off or giv'em the cat immediately. Very clean and fast!

I only use my electric knife. As wallcat said a bucket of perch does not take long. The best knife I have owned/used is the Rapala.

The electric filet knife is good if you have ever used it and got the hang of it! You realize its so much faster to clean fish that way! But then you have some pple that use just a filet knife. Some like that better guess it all dapends on what you like and use to using! Me I much rather have the electric filet knife!

I agree with Walcat... for a couple a regular knife is fine. But you can bang out a bucket in no time with an electric. Being a bass fisherman, I don't have much use for either any more.
