with the ponds and lakes starting to freeze up in southern ontario, making them unfishable till safe ice.i had the "itch" to fish and with only creeks and some rivers open in my area i decided to head on down to a local creek for some mid december carp action. armed with some corn and worms,my buddy and i set up at a water treatment discharge along the small creek we were fishing.all in all we had a great day catching carp and a few surprise little rainbows.i say surprise because they arent native to this creek and have never been stocked according to the local tackle shop and the local fish and game/conservation authority.the only conclusion we could come up with is that they were caught below and lifted above a natural dam/waterfall that is im possible to jump.

Although carp are not high on my fish list they are a heck of alot a fun when that's all that's available . I remember taking step ladders out into the water and throwing corn in the water and waiting for them to show up and shooting them with our bows.

Me & my buddies call them 'freshwater bonefish' because of some of the reel-screaming runs they can make! We used to do a 'Carp Classic' in the Passaic River, that was lined with mulberry trees. In the summertime when the berries would ripen, they'd fall into the river and the carp just hung out under the trees and slurped them up! So we dragged our canoes down the bank & into the river, after loading up on tons of berries for bait first. Good times that was! Of course, the Passaic River has a notorious history of being one of the most polluted rivers in the USA in the 70s and 80s. We used to joke about where some of the good spots to cast were...near the engine block, by that shopping cart, etc....

That is to funny I seriously wonder how much heavy metals have settled at the base of my brain simply by trodding along the mucky banks at low tide. That river ran right through my town and was only a few blocks away in any direction. We were always fishing it for carp & eels, and when we weren't doing that, we would cause general mayhem by shooting rats and or lighting off explosives...ah, youth....
