I started fishing (bass, etc... other than catfish) about 2 years ago. I started using plastics, which work great, but I moved into rapalas about a year ago. I now own about 150 lures, from originals to clackins and some old lures like rattlin fat raps and long cast minnows. I feel it's more of a collection!! Anyways, I most of the time use DT's, Shad raps, skitter walks, props and pops using colors that I "feel" will work good. I know that for clear water you need to use silver, blue, etc and chart, red, etc for stained water.... Then you have to consider if its cloudy, sunny, early in the morning, noon, etc.. , plus target species, just too many factors. Also, what about colors like baby bass, bluegill, shad and combinations like purple and chart, hotsteel, etc. Is it a chart that begginers can use, any help will be greatly appreciated....

This is an excellent site, by the way: www.crankbaitcentral.comHere are a couple of articles on color - www.crankbaitcentral.com/CrankbaitABCs/Color-Flash-Markings-PART-I.htmlwww.crankbaitcentral.com/CrankbaitABCs/Color-Flash-Markings-PART-II.htmlHope this helps!

My wife and I fish for bass. When we're throwing cranks, she fishes out of the back of the boat and 90% of the time she uses babybass, no matter what the conditions are. She's never been skunked that I can remember and some days she kicks my butt and I'll have 6 rods rigged with different cranks laying on the deck. I've seen silver work in muddy water and chartreuse work in clear. I guess you have to start with what you have the most confidence in and go from there.

Thanks for the link Thed, very useful information. Nothing is written on stone, there is not a general consensus as to which colors work best...... just as wlb mentioned. Bluegill works good for me in DT 6, as perl gray shiner in fats and flats. Skitter pop in frog and skitter prop in shad also work well for bass. One thing that white bass love here in summer is skitter walk. You can get the bag limit in 15 min, you just need to find them. Walleye is a different story, it's more of an accident when I catch them, most on texas rigged worms. I sometimes try to use all my lures, but I get frustrated when I don't catch anything on them. I just feel like I need to use everything that is in my tacklebox, so that I won't be feel guilty when I buy more "useless" lures.......... I would say I don't know how to use most of them properly.

This is true - although no one can say that you aren't prepared!

If you fish a river, try a DT in Brown Crawdad, FireTiger or Baby Bass. If you're in a natural lake, I have found DT's in Perch, Blue/Silver or (again) Baby Bass work pretty good.
