So Israel gave the world cherry tomatoes and commercially raise gray mullet in fresh water fish farms (and in the Sea of Galilee) -- what next? Well how about raising white grouper (Epinephelus aeneus) in fresh water fish farms? Yes! Believe it or not a kibbutz near Beit She'an in the Jordan Valley have done just that They took saltwater white groupers from the Mediterranean Sea and are successfully rasing them in their freshwater fish ponds. These fish sell for 150 shekels a kilo and so they figured it would be profitable to farm them where they could harvest them easily. I wonder if they taste as good as the saltwater versions? Maybe some smart guy will release some into the Sea of Galilee and then we could have some real sport

I remember the talk in the fishing mags when I was in the UK about taking out the pike from the local lakes as they eat the other fish. The gist of the conclusion was that to keep them in the lake is actually beneficial to the other fish as the pike (and other predators) mostly eat the wounded, sick or week fish thus making the surviving stock stronger. I'm sure trying to get that wisdom past Israeli bureaucracy would be near impossible -- so maybe a clandestine op after all "Who, me officer?" Don't know what you're talking about."
