Had a decent day today, mostly some small bass on the DT-Thug in OPSD. I switched to a DT-6 in Shad & pulled out this beast! ;D Made my weekend!

Nice fish Ted. Did it put up much of a fight?
What's the difference between a pickerel and a pike?

Nice fish Ted. Did it put up much of a fight? What's the difference between a pickerel and a pike? Well Im not really sure, other than knowing pike get much much bigger. I think the state record in NJ is 8lbs or something like that. This one (and one I caught a couple years ago) had to be near the 5lb mark. I was surprised that this one did not put up a huge fight, compared to other ones I had caught. Then again this one slammed the lure not far from the canoe, for some reason pickerel always seem to do this, just about as the lure is about to come out of the water they wail on it. Im primarily a bass fisherman, but I have caught so many of these in my home lake that I am really growing to appreciate these 'trash fish' as they are called. And no I just snapped a few pics and let him go, they changed the policy of our lake to 'catch & release' only, which I am fully on board with.

Nice catch Ted!!! Those "trash fish" put up one hell of a fight. I got one once that I'd say was probably around 5lbs and he took a chunk out of my j11 pike color!!!
I used to not like catching them, but once you fight a big boy, you get a better appreciation for these powerful creatures. Now I target them sometimes. In my home lake they really seem to smash anything in firetiger!! Just don't forget your needlenose pliers!!!

Exactly - now that I have my long-nose pliers & 'fish-handling gloves' - lol - Im ready for these toothy critters! You pike fishermen are probably laughing at me, but Ive never had the opportunity to go pike fishing, so this is as close as I get!

Awesome job!!!! Chain pickerel are lots of fun. They grab a crankbait hard with a nice pull and hit topwaters with an explosion like a volcano.

Pike and Muskie are notorious for following baits before they hit them If you see them following them up to the boat get your rod in the water and start doing a figure 8 pattern with your lure.Alot of times this will trigger them to strike. Its also neat to see them hammer your bait

I have seen quite a few follow right up to my boat, but never thought of trying the figure 8 on them though. I'll have to keep that in mind!!

Your pickeral is a walleye!!!! I thought the same thing to, so I e-mail Bob izumi and asked him. He had said Pickeral and Walleye are different types of fish. Which they are, there is a couple differences they're just hard to spot.

Did you? I asked some pros about their experiences here in Germany but no one had any luck. Btw. I started my pike season with a good size 38.5" last sunday with a jerkbait in perch pattern. Hope its a good sign for 2010. ;D

Dont know about pike, but I seen a muskie swipe at a double cowgirl spinner bait 3 times during a figure 8 before swimming off. It was awesome to watch
