I live in CT along Long Island Sound. This time of the year is what we call the spring time striper run. Saw high tide was about 5:20pm Monday where I live so I decided to hit an area of the place I was killing the bluefish at last year starting around 2pm. 1 guy was there when I got there and he said the stripers were hitting earlier in the day during the low tide. I started off with a LC-10 C. Caught a 15" and 17" schoolie. About an hour before high things started to slow down. Switched over to a XR-10 S and caught another schoolie. Once everything stopped I searched some other areas and had no luck. Once it was almost 6pm I decided to head back over to where I was having the luck when I first got there. One of my first casts out there with the X-Rap facing towards the breakwater I caught a 14" sriper. Right away thought that the fish are out there so I switched over to my new SSR-9 PD. Casting that lure out there with a steady retrieve and I was killing those schoolies. I was out numbering everybody else like crazy. Caught 2 20"ers on the Shallow Shad Rap which were my biggest of the day. Caught 3 in a row with that Shallow Shad Rap. Things started to quiet down just as the sun hit the horizon so I switched over to a RNR-8 CH. Had 1 hit but nothing else. Started seeing splashes on the surface and signs of baitfish swimming right under the surface. Threw a SSP-9 SSBMU out there. Caught no stripers but caught a baitfish. So I right away switched over to a F-11 S. Hit 3 and lost 2 with a slow retrieve right under the surface. Finally hit the road around 8pm.
Caught close to 20 schoolies from 14" to 17" with 2 being 20". 2 on a LC-10 C, 2 on a XR-10 S, 3 on a F-11 S, and 11 on a SSR-9 PD. 20"ers caught on Shallow Shad Rap.
In CT striped bass have to be 28 inches long or bigger in order to keep. 2 is the limit.
