On Tuesday I hit a park that has a number of ponds on it. Played with a few Rapalas along a wall that drops straight down but had no luck. Heard a report from a buddy that he had seen a big largemouth hanging out in a bed at a pond. I went over to that pond but didn't see it. I stayed at that pond and started twitching a F-9 RT on the surface. Kept on seeing signs of pickerel come shooting out from the weeds and got lots of hits of the surface. Caught a total of 9 chain pickerel ranging from 8" to 13" all with that F-9.

I never use leader for pickerel Are they not like Northern pike with big sharp teeth? Pickeral and Walleye are almost identical. The fish I believe he is talking about are Northern Pike/ Jack fish.

I never use leader for pickerel Are they not like Northern pike with big sharp teeth? They are, and I've had many a line cut with them - but the thing with pickerel, you usually aren't targeting them specifically when you are fishing - I'm usually bass fishing when I tangle with them myself...

I'm nothing like those bass fishermen who complain about chain pickerel and call them "slime darts". I really enjoy fishing for pickerel and love how hard they hit the lure. Seeing them come shooting out from the weeds is so cool. Whenever I'm at a pond or lake that holds pickerel, I'm always hoping for some fun with the pickerel even if I might not be targeting them.

Are they not like Northern pike with big sharp teeth? Exactly! How did you get your lure out without slicing your fingers?

Are they not like Northern pike with big sharp teeth? Pickeral and Walleye are almost identical. The fish I believe he is talking about are Northern Pike/ Jack fish. People in different parts of the world and America think pickerel and walleye are the same but they're not. Walleye are in the Perch family while chain pickerel are in the pike family. Walleye don't hide in weeds. They prefer rocks and sand. Pickerel love topwater and fast moving lures while walleye suspend in the water and aren't as fast as pickerel. Pickerels' favorite food is trout. One time when I landed a nice pickerel I saw a brown trout already in its mouth. A lake that was once home to many pickerel now hardly has any pickerel. Story is when the state started to stock that lake with trout they weren't too successful because of many pickerel eating the trout and there being lots of weeds. The state decided to put grass carp in the water and use chemicals to help clean the weeds. That made most pickerel die and now you find many trout and hardly any pickerel swimming in that lake.

I've heard that in some places pickeral are called "walleyes," probably the same places that call walleyes "pike-perch."
I can't understand why some fishermen--most of whom seem to be bass fishermen--hold pickeral in such low regard. They hit like a ton of bicks, fight hard and are a blast to catch.
Most of us have had the experience of pickeral following a lure right to the boat but last year we had the ultimate example of this. My partner was lifting his spinnerbait out of the water to make another cast when a pick cleared the water like a Polaris rocket a good three feet and took a swipe at it.
Startled the hell out of us.
A few casts later I had it on a hot steel floating Rap. Nice fish, over two feet.
It would have been just hilarious if it had impaled itself in the air on my partner's spinnerbait.

I love fighting a big ole pickerel!! they are serious fighters!! Not too happy with the monster who stole my f9 in bcsd last week though!!! I followed him around for a few minutes trying to snag my net on the treble not hooked into his mouth, but whenever I got close he darted off like a bullet!! just another rapala I have to replace someday!!
