Got my first ever catfish on a rapala today. I've caught them on senkos occasionly, but never on a rapala. I caught it with a J9 in hot tiger. I was pretty disappointed at first since I thought I had a huge bass, but at least I got to fight something!!

I was pretty disappointed at first since I thought I had a huge bass, but at least I got to fight something!! That's great! How big was the cat? Were you twitching the J9 on the surface or doing a slow retrieve? I really have to get myself off up to the Sea of Galilee soon and try for catfish with Rapalas.....

As my name would imply, I'm a huge fan of catfish and I've been fortunate enough to catch quite a few on rapalas. I know exactly what you mean. You feel that tug and it takes off and you think you have an absolute monster on your line. Gotta love the fight a cat puts up.
If you want to try to catch more just try to find a school of them somewhere, usually near a dam. Then try to figure out exactly what depth the school is sitting at and match your rapala to it. A cat will not usually shy away from hitting a rap.

I have caught quite a few catfish on shad raps and deeper diving lures. I was fishing tonight and caught a really nice one on a size 7 skitter pop I have heard about topwater for Wels Catfish, but not catfish around here. That is a definate first for me. I thought I had a huge bucketmouth on and it turns out to be ole whisker face. Oh well, the fight was good. On another note, I caught around a dozen bass, a crappie, a white bass, and a bunch of bluegill tonight. I caught my first 6 bass on 7 casts.

Yea. I've never caught a cat on a skitter pop. I might need to try that. I usually catch them in the summer on an F-3 or an F-5, usually in gold. When they go down deep, a fat rap is always a good choice as well.
We have a lot of large smallies in the same areas that I fish the cats. So for the first couple seconds you don't know if you have a cat or a huge smallmouth. Thats until the first headshake. Headshakes are always a good sign of a cat on the line.

Actually caught 2 more cats on rapalas today(F-9 YP, and BCSD). Also caught bass on a special SP7 I recently got from Jason in Chrome SFC, and my biggest perch ever on a custom J9 from Steve in his pink panther pattern. Also caught a few bass with a senko, wacky style.

Had a first with cats yesterday. Got my largest channel ever on a size 4 mepps. He went just over 10 lbs. All in all pretty sweet to get my largest cat and my only cat on a mepps in one shot.

It seems cats like to take on everything, I caught one using 1/4oz rooster tail and just last weekend using a Yum 7.5" ribbontail. I hope that I'll can catch one using a rapala.

I've caught more than a few Channel Cats on Rapalas fishing Kentucky Lake over the years. You think they're primarily scent feeders, but they seem to show predator instincts when a Shad Rap or DT comes wobbling by. Mine too have come while fishing for bass, and I also don't mind the fight of a heavy cat as a diversion, but I must admit it is a pain having to stop fishing to re-tie because they rolled and wrapped themselves in my line, and slimed and ruined the end three feet of it. Oh well, that's fishing I guess!

you can bet on skitterpops, catfish love poppers, perfect example is my spod story, if you haven't read it, go to the original lure suggestion page, i wrote a detailed description of what happened.

ok, it looks like i'm getting a lot of competition ;D ;D yes, cats are really great fighters. and it's a sad things that smaller ones only rarely hit lures (wels cats usually do, but bullheads don't)
