Monday afternoon and evening I hit the same spot where I was killing the stripers back in April. Bluefish are now in but haven't started to get too active yet like they should be. Fished the water from 12:30pm til 7:30pm. High tide was at 2:37pm and was hoping for action around the turn of the tide. I tried throwing a SXR-10 S, RNR-8 CH, SSR-9 PD, SSP-9 SSBMU, 3/8 ounce Kastmaster, Hopkins, Heddon Lucky 13, and a number of soft plastics. Only thing that happened was I got a nice hit on the SXR. When I looked at the lure I was so sad. I saw what I knew were scratches from those sharp bluefish teeth on the tail end of the lure. Nothing else happened and not even a tail from a soft plastic bitten off by those choppers.
One player in the game was mother nature. Gusty 10 to 20 mph E and SE winds with BMP around 30.00 inches. Another thing I noticed was areas of ripples on the surface of the water which I had a feeling were small schools of baitfish hiding from the blues before they move in on em. I was right. But then once I got that hit and saw a few splashes, no more ripples on the surface and no more bluefish which meant the blues chased the bait out.
