I'm trying to figure out which Rapala would work best for catfish (where I fish). The water is only 1.5m max (about 4-5ft) so I need a shallow diver. It would also have to have rattles and preferably be a floating type. One that I could crank kind of slow. Lots of vibration and noise!
Any suggestions?
I tried the Rattlin' Rap but I have to crank it pretty fast to stop it from dragging on the bottom.

I don't specifically fish for catfish when I'm casting crankbaits, but I've caught my fair share of them while out bass fishing on Kentucky Lake. Give the DT series a try, I've had a lot hit them while bass fishing in shallow (10 feet or less) water in the summer time. Some color suggestions: Bleeding Olive Shiner, Chartreuse & Purple, Silver w/Black back.

The water is pretty murky and so a bright color (if catfish can actually see anything with their poor eyesight and the murky water) would be better. There's nothing much on eBay at the moment but I will keep looking...... Nigel

The FAT03 and Flat03 both have rattles and would work, as would the Crankin Rap CRR05.

The Crankin Raps are 'affordable' at a retail price of only 5.99 - the CRR05 is my favorite, I think the 03 is a little small. Which colors? You can't go wrong with one in FT, and the other in Shad...

You can't go wrong with one in FT, and the other in Shad... I ended up buying 2 - a CRR03SD and a CRR03HSD I paid $6.99 each - but the shipping was real cheap So I suppose it's a case of swings and roundabouts. I chose the CRR03 as the 05 dives a bit too deep for that particular pond. However, if they proves successful (and they should also be good over the shallow reefs on the coast), then I will invest in the 05 for the Sea of Galilee

i would try the largest size of saltwater skitterpop there is. Most catfish are virtually blind, and they locate their food by sound and vibration. Catfish love popping (no not in that way ), so poppers would be my number 1 choice. some people row out in boats when fishing for wels catfish, and using a special stick thing, they hit the water in such a way that a loud popping sound is dirrected down towards the bait. On sunday, i had a huge wels of about 40-50lb jump out the water and attack my spod, i was spodding out all things halibut, then when my spod was empty, instead of just reeling in, i was jerking it along the top, basically using it as a popper, then out of the blue this huge catfish jumped out right behind my spod, so they really do love popping. Sorry again Nigel, and i hope this helps

They were doing that a lot all afternoon. I shall try again in a couple of weeks. I'll get there as early as possible and hope that they are hungry for breakfast..... No need to apologize - we all are learning all the time
