I was looking through one of my tackle boxes and noticed that I still had a section containing Rapala spoons. I have fished them in the past for trout, & redfish. I'm wondering if I should retire these to the collection? I certainly have plenty of other spoons that I could use. This also made me wonder if I need to look at my other Rapalas in my tackle box and pull any others that have been discontinued? Whadya think??

Personally I fish all of my Rapalas that I have purchased retail, whether they have since been retired or not. The only non-fished Rapalas I have are the small collection of commemorative Rat-L-Raps I have bought over the years as pure collectibles (the ones painted with promos). I figure with eBay you can almost replace just about any lure you might lose during use. ;D

I certainly do. If I buy it, then it's going in the water. In my opinion, they are meant to be used. Now on the other hand, I do have a few limited editions that I picked up an extra of just to leave it in the box. lol I know, I'm weird.

Which one from the 60s are you speaking about, Take Shallow Fat Raps for example. Those are discontinued, and they generally average about $10-$20, even used, sometimes more - which is way more than they ever cost retail at the time. That is only one example - when you start looking at discontinued colors such as Clown, Silver Blue, Silver Gold, Orange Crawdad - there are a lot of examples where they have a lot of value. Some of that is due to collecting - but I think most if it is because they are just good fish-catching patterns...

So far I don't have any discountinued once since I am only in my first year buying Rapala, but I wouldn't fish them and only collect them as antiques.

Rapala collecting is still relatively new, we all know these lures will never be worth what those lures are today, or probably ever. But as with anything collectible, the more time that passes, the more scarce or rare certain items become. In this economy I'm not taking anything worth $20 or $30 as having no value...

When I do, I try and have at least one of the same model brand new before its sister goes in the water. I mainly fish new style Shad raps, jointed shad raps and X-Raps so I don't usually run into this problem.

I have never had a rapala in clown that hasn't caught me fish. A skitter pop, SSR, or jointed, in clown(all disc.) are with me everytime I fish!
