Hello guys, i was wondering, in your experiences, what has been the best rapala for catching pike in the 30 inch or more range

Wish I could help you out, but pike are almost a rarity in the NJ waters where I fish. Whenever I actually hooked one, it was usually by accident...

Nathen, I go to the U.P of Michigan every spring (and have been doing so, for at least 20+ years)
On those trips, here's what I've noticed. Northerns seem to be a bit 'slugish' I've used Husky Jerks (color depending on weather) and larger floaters. All retrived, slow, slow & slow around submerged weed edges and the north shore of back bays (they warm up first) and if you can find a north shore back bay with a dark bottom, it'll warm up even faster. Mid-day to early evening, as it warms up, so do the northerns.
Just my thoughts from fishing spring (late May) In the U.P. Summer & fall, different patterns
Hope that helps Steve "Rapala-Guru"

That slow, slow, slow comment was ironic, because i caught a pike on a size 12 husky jerk reeling as fast as i could, so what do you think is the best route to go, slow, or fast. I have heard different oppinions on different pike fishing sites, and i think it might just depend on the temperature of the water, and the time of year.

Temp of water is a key. (just one of many) try both ways and let the fish tell you what they like. My example was what I've noticed during Spring fishing. Somewhat colder water temps. Shortly after Ice out.
Summer different, Fall different. Northens like all other fish, do there thing, according to water temps.

Well, im heading for Michigan this weekend, and fishing at a lake full of pike. Do you have a lure suggestion for this time of year? Also, dont worry i have almost every rapala lure on us markets, so just suggest a lure, and i probibly have it.

This weekend!! Warm clothes... We've had some wild weather, ice, rain, snow, wind And that was today...
Looks like the weekend is going to be cold and snow.
Where abouts are you going? One of the big lakes?

The biggest pike I caught on a Rapala came on a Shad colored #5 Rapala being trolled in June, so the water temp wasn't too cold. Last year I did pull a 30 incher out of the Kankakee River using a #7 shallow shad rap in silver. This year I will be putting some SSR-14s to the test on some pike waters !

Another old thread to bring back memories I haven't caught any pike for a while, but I used to use Super Shad Raps and had awesome luck with those. After living in California for a little over a year, it's nice to get back to an area that has pike, well pickerel at least.

Great luck with the new rattling crank raps. Great for pulling over milfoil. red and orange work best around the Twin Cites. Firetiger is good too.

I have been stroking them on the new Max Rap 15 and 18 - RH and anything with orange on it. My other choice are the Super Shad Raps.

I fish pike year round and have found a lure that I will use consistantly above any other lure and in any weather or situation for targeting larger fish. I use the largest olive x-rap (XR12 I believe) because it is shallow enough for fishing the shallow pre and post spawn areas in the spring and over weedbeds throughout the summer. The nature of the x-rap allows it to be fished either aggressively or slow and, dare I even say finesse, so that it produces during all times of the year almost regardless of the mood of the fish. I find the naturalistic coloration works best on average and so if you are looking for one lure to do it all this is it in my opinion.

I used the previousally mentioned lure to catch a 39.5 inch, 18 lbs pike and even a nice brown trout as well as several descent walleye. I also took a buddy out fishing last spring and he caught an 8 lbs walleye on it. Best Rapala on the market for pike up here as far as I'm concerned.

Where are u in Canada, Ont maybe? I use super shad raps a lot here in NB for muskies and stripers . We dont have any pike! Check out my post under "fishing and bragging board, SSR strikes again"" to see the results from a SSR14 hot tiger color. I also caught a 37 !/2 muskie the next day with the same lure. Cheers Casey

I'm in Alberta actually and have also just rescently gotten myself a super shad rap in perch and am really excited to give it a try for big pike but it will take a good number of large fish to de-throne my favorite rapala. Over 100 fish and three personal bests actually. haha.

Ps. Wow! That is an incredible striper you caught there! I can only wish I lived in a place that had those around. I do really enjoy pike and walleye too though.
