Never fished with HJ lures, but was wondering if anyone can tell how they are for trolling? Or perhaps long casting so you can get that pause in the retrieve now and then?
Thanks, Jeff

They are not as good as say a long cast minnow but you can toss them a hell of alot farther than say an original floater-(casting). I have caught just about everything on these lures. The hj's troll great also-You really have to long line even the dhj to get down but they are effective as my dhj is all gouged from teeth just this year. One of my favorite things to do is get some lines out and turn the boat. The inside lure suspends for a while and the outside speeds up-they run great slow or fast-plus they're in the Rapala depth guide-great for precision trolling. One of my favorite lures if you can't tell-almost wrote a book on them

I don't use balls here-We make our walking sinkers with wire in different weights. (3-4 oz. maximum) We use wire to keep the rig about 12" off the bottom. Mostly I use just long snells with this-no spinner rigs. Just the snell and the live bait. I guess I have the mentality that if they are hanging that deep (30+) then they are relatively inactive so slow is the game. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about but I have not been skunked yet this season. I have been thinking I want to try some dipsy divers first as most of my big fish have been caught long lined in 25'+ water-Do you ever use the dipsy's?

I run the 0 and the 1 dipsy for salmon. I was thinking of running jet divers for walleye. They are a lot smaller and you don't have to long line so much to get down. Might try a mini dipsy, but how far behind should you trail the line?
Another thing about a down rigger is you can add a slider rig to it. Essentially run an extra line on each rod at a different depth.
I have run those bait walker rigs with live bait as well. I like to cheat and have to bait rigs on each one. Second rig is 2-3 foot higher than the bottom one. Haven't really tried a crank on one yet.

I always hear of people doing it but just think if you had a lure that would go 4"-and it was hanging down there only 2' off the bottom-would'nt it be just plowing the bottom? I always thought if I did it it would be with say an original floater-what do you think? Any preferance on dipsy makes?

dipsy makes??? dipsy is a dipsy. There are other types of diver planers out there. I like the dipsy for salmon fishing no doubt. yellow and green doing the best. A one pound bottom bouncer ball (trolled at walleye speeds) should be heavy enough to get down. At those speeds there shouldn't be so much blow back that you can't determine the depth your lure is running at.
As far as the lure digging bottom, I have always prefered to trolling with shallow lipped lures behind other devices. If I am just flat lining, I will troll lipped lures. Exception is trolling for salmon on the lake. Jointeds troll sweet. I also like to troll mfr and rfr4 lures a lot. SSR and waly divers. Going to hit the water with some HJ 8 and 10s this year. Might try some DHJ straight lining.
