Weather fronts when fishing can be, in a couple of words,
They Suck.
Now then, last weekend, A weekend I have had plans for,
oh, about 364 days....
I always mark the day of Oct 21st, as a day I will spend
all the shooting hours, sitting out in my duck blind,
a couple of Thermos's of coffee, a few boxes of shells.
I really never care about the weather, it just doesn't matter on my birthday.
I'm gonna sit out there, no matter what.
Well, I work later Fri, than I had planned too or was scheduled for. Not a real big deal.
I got to the 'Farm', with enough time to get a couple hours of hunting in. Saw a few ducks, got a few shots. Managed to have a good evening.
Next day (Sat) got up real early, and noticed a slight weather change. Wind was coming out of an odd direction for this time of year. And that got me thinking.
A cold front or any type of front was moving though,
what was this going to do...
I know what it does for fishing..
I haven't had that many days when fronts move through while duck hunting. And those have most always been warm fronts.
The ducks were there, fly'n pretty high (even with the cloud cover)
Got a few more ducks, took even more shots
Had a Great birthday, doing the second thing I love (duck hunting)
Got up Sun, and boy did things change, temp dropped, wind was coming in from, the north, northwest add in some rain, ugly dark low cloud cover and it didn't have that same 'feel to it'
Got out to the duck blind and settled in, did see a few more ducks than I had.
As the 'morning part' of hunting went on the weather took another turn, it felt like the 'low front' had pulled through and the wind shifted to almost completely out of the north.
And almost as quickly, the faucet turned on..
Ducks EVERYWHERE...
I saw more ducks than I have seen in many years at one time.
Had 'flights of ducks' all over the place, circling the lake from every direction. Big groups, small groups, med groups.
There were everywhere, I was trying to keep one eye one sky, the other on the decoys (on all sides of my blind)
One hand on my gun, the other hand on several different types of duck calls,
Then throw in about 6 or 7 big flocks of geese (about 500 or 600 of them)
All types of ducks, woodies, mallards, wigeon, bufflehead, golden-eye, Redheads, Canvasbacks, Black ducks, Teal, Scaups(lesser & greater), ringnecks, pintails and a few others.
Wow, what a weekend it was!!!!
I'm starting to think about 'weather fronts' a little differently.
Hopefully I'll have another great birthday hunt next year.
I've already marked a few days for it!!
