I have an Abu Garcia Vendetta VTC73-6 Medium Heavy rod paired with a Revo Inshore. On the rod it states lures weights from 1/2-1 3/8 oz. Is that the rods minimum/maximum casting weights or just recommendations? Could I cast a lure that is 1 1/2 oz. OK without stressing the rod? (I'm looking at the SXR14).

I dont pay much attention either to lure weights and I certainly wouldnt worry about 1/8 ounce or even 1/2 oz

I've been doing some casting experiments these last couple of days. I work in a rubber factory where we make [chicken] plucking fingers of various sizes. They make great practice plugs So anyway, I have come to the conclusion that the recommended lure weights, as stamped on the rod, are the best. Too light a lure doesn't give any 'feel' during the cast and, on a baitcaster, causes lots of backlashes (you really have to set the mechanical brake so that the lure gently falls). At the other end of the scale a lure that is at the rod's maximum weight, or slightly over, gives the feel of things being too cumbersome and heavy - I couldn't get any decent cast when using a [practice] plug at or just over the rod's recommended maximum lure weight. The best results were when I was using a [practice] plug just under the rod's maximum recommended lure weight. I could throw that thing with full force and feel the rod's power! Also with [practice] plugs just below the rod's recommended lure weight, I was able to back the mechanical brake of completely and not have any signs of a backlash
