Hey guys! What rod do you use for topwater baits, more specifically skitter pops, props and walks? I've been looking at 6' to 6'6" medium action baitcasting rods. To be honest I got this information from the Skitter Pop video with Al Lindner. I'll buy a cheap one first, maybe a BPS Graphite Series just to get the hang of it. By the way, what do you use for crankbaits? I fish from the shore so I've looked at the 7' medium. Thanks! John

I can't recommend anything specific for topwaters, but all of my rods are either 6'6" or 7', mostly medium action. If you'll be fishing from shore though you might want something with a more fast action, specifically at the tip - the increased bend will give you more intertia when throwing from shore, increasing your casting distance. Heavier rods aren't really recommened, unless of course you are fishing around a lot of heavy cover. If not, go with the lighter rod so you can cast farther and cover more water. Hope that helps!

One thing with the Skitter Walks though is practicing with the "walk the dog" action. It took me a while to get it right. You have to make short continuous twitches whilst at the same time reeling in the slack line. It gets quite tiring after a while. The Skitter Pops are much easier to work -- you get to rest between twitches

Thanks guys Where I fish there isn't a lot of cover, so I'll probably go for the medium. A 6'6" might be the best, because I have a small car and the 7' might be a tight squeeze. And yes, I also prefer the Skitter Pop to the Walk... But I have to learn how to use it properly!

Simply go with the two peice rod then, the rod length also can impact casting distance as well; so my preference in this case would be for a two-peice 7' rod with a fast tip. Good luck!

Ooooor that... I really didn't remember I could have a 2 piece rod Tomorrow, if the rain stops for a bit, I'm going to a new lake. It's called Castelo de Bode reservoir (it means Goat's Castle... yeah. Me neither) and it has a lot more structure than the lakes in the south. It's about 75 miles NE of here, so not that far. Here are a few photos. I'll take some of my own tomorrow, hopefully. It looks much more natural than the ones I'm used to, has more cover and some islands close to shore... It's brilliant! Since it takes about a month for the rods to get from the US to my local shop, and the weather isn't that good right now... I'll have plenty of time to study the area before I go fishing.

John that looks like a great place to fish I like to use a 7' medium/heavy rod with a fast tip. This has been really good rod for me.

Indeed it is! ;D My mum told me I went there as a kid... But I can't remember I probably won't go tomorrow (or... this morning) because of the stormy weather, it keeps getting worse. I'll try to go up there next weekend. Like Ted and Steve recommended, I'll probably go for a 7' Medium rod. I am casting from the shore and that makes a big difference. I'll probably go for the 2 piece so I don't have to ask either of my folks for their cars

That island closest to shore looks like a great spot to start off with, no doubt!

Yes, it does! There are a few more islands. This one is called Ilha do Lombo, that house is actually an inn. I can't wait to go there! Compared to the lakes I'm used to this one has a rocky bottom, instead of sand, and much more cover. I'll see if I can rent a boat... That would make a great day's fishing!

Great pics! Thanks for sharing John. Seeing those pics makes me want to go fishin now, but everything is frozen here. I'm not going to be much help in your rod decision. I use mostly 6'6" or 7' BPS Bionic Blades in med h. Been using them since the 90's, very durable rod for the money.

Two weeks ago I got a G. Loomis Crankbait Series 7' casting rod and a Shimano Curado E, decided to go with a baitcasting outfit. Today we went to that lake and took a few pictures: Something I'm not used to in the southern lakes... Lots and lots of cover! ;D An H13 with the new rod A Joe's Custom DT6 that Ted sent me a while back, looks great! The island with the inn I talked to you about In a warm (-ish) January day, the water was clear and calm... Brilliant! The most brilliant bit was when we left, we saw a little river a few yards back... It was a great day. We were there for a couple of hours, enough to test a few new lures out
