I like the red hooks better also, but I think Rapala just puts them on their "bleeding" series of baits that they produce in many of their models. From a scientific standpoint, I don't think they really make much of a difference, but it seems to be a confidence thing with anglers, if you believe something is better, it may give you the confidence to fish harder or longer. That being said, as I mentioned, I too prefer them, just a confidence thing. I don't switch out my trebles with the red ones on new lures, but I keep several boxes of the red hooks in different sizes for when I need to replace damaged hooks on still usable lures. What is it they say? "Most lures are designed to catch the anglers attention more than the fishes."

I do believe that red hooks will change the bait. I have 4 of each color lures with me at all times. 2 will have regular hooks, 1 has a red treble on the front and, 1 has a red treble on the back. Little details like this is what I think make the difference in a fish or two.

I like the red hooks. I have changed to red on most of my favorites and any time I have to change a hook I will go to red!!

i saw a video on youtube not long ago in which a pro angler says the bleeding series have been proven to catch more fish side by side than a normal rapala. I'm not doubting, but if a fish is gonna eat your lure, it means its feeding, put any good lure in front of a hungry fish and it will probably have a crunch.

On the other hand I just saw a video with Dave Mercer where he was using red line for deep fishing... Because "underwater, red is the first colour to disappear". www.twitvid.com/BB93QSo... Maybe red works because it hides the hooks

Actually that is an excellent point which I never even thought of - although it probably does not apply to shallow running lures, since I think the lure has to go deeper in order for the light penetration to change...

since I've been using the bleeding jointed lures with the red hookes I have the feeling I get more strikes. Alltough i know it shouldnt make any difference to the fish at all, I have more faith in red hookes now.

Have you guys noticed that red hooks rust any quicker than regular? I havn't used many of them and was wondering as I am soon to replace some hooks on some Rapalas.

I have noticed that these red hooks bend more quickly. have a bent out hook from a pik that was only 1.5 ft. And I use a very light rod

red hooks are a bit less strong, but they seem to fool the fish sometimes. i saw some people around here painting original trebles on their lures. i don't know if this worked either

I feel that red hooks make a difference (to-the-fish-wise) sometimes - but more importantly - it's a confidence thing to-the-angler-wise.
One negative to red hooks - because they come with the red coating - I feel that they are less sharp.
To answer Jerkbait's question - I feel that they rust less.

I think Im the only guy who dislikes red hooks. But thats all you can find for the most part. So many of the old lures i buy get new red hooks. To John I Think red hooks dull faster then the old Bronze hooks. I seem to have to take a file to them after each time on the water. One or two passes from Dr. Slick and I'm set.

I also dislike red hooks... I replace all red hooks as well as perma steel hooks with BN on all my rapalas... don't ask my why, one of those things!!

I spent about a month experimenting with red hooks on identical baits and found no difference in amount of fish caught. They are weaker than other hooks and after a couple fish the paint comes off. If a bait comes with them on I will not replace them but I do not ever buy red hooks.
