Hi all, I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I was curious if its possible to use crankbaits from highly-elevated piers? For instance I frequently visit this pier that hangs over the Atlantic Ocean (I live in NJ) and its about 30 to 40 feet above the water. Can I use a saltwater crankbait here, or am I too elevated above the water? If it helps, I was thinking about purchasing the Rapala Magnum, which can dive as far as 25 feet. And assuming crankbaits work fine off of highly-elevated piers - would I be better off with the MaxRap (the only thing that worries is me is it only dives 1-2 feet below, is that deep enough?) Would appreciate any help, thanks!

I'm from NJ too, and I am actually going to LBI next week - although they do not have any high piers - I would highly suggest sinking baits instead of floaters/divers. So my plan is to bring my Clackin Raps, Countdowns in sizes 9 & 11, and any metal spoon or jig that I can. I'll be doing a lot of surf fishing & fishing from shore, so I really need to get some distance. Best of luck!

Thanks for the reply!
Someone on another site suggested using a 3-way swivel method with a sinker, cast it out, and then retrieve; you think that would work okay? I do wonder if I cast it out regularly -- no sinkers or whatnot, just the crankbait -- if the Magnum can still get deep enough to a point where its suspending.

I guess a lot of it depends on where the fish are that you are trying to target - for me, I don't know anything about fishing in the sea. So I am just hoping to throw something out there far enough to create as much of a strike zone as I can, and hopes whatever it is Im throwing has enough flash to attract something.
