I've been going through my Rapalas and jotting down their weights and diving depths (I always forget what they are when I go fishing) into a small notebook. However, the 2 Floating Magnums that I have (7 & 9) don't have anything printed on their boxes about diving/swimming depths. Anybody have the info?

my 9cm floating magnum says it dives 4"-7" on the box, whether that's inches or feet, i don't know. I wouldn't have thought it would be inches, but mine dives to nothing like 4 feet, mine stays just below the surface, so i guess it's inches.

That sounds about right I guess -- 4'-7' (feet) about 1.2-2.1m. The 7 should be about the same. Thanks.

no problem, mine doesn't dive anywhere near that deep lol, probably because i like to reel my lures in slowly (that's what's always worked for me). Those magnums have got a brilliant action, yet except my clackin' raps, that is my only rapala i've never had a hit on.

I really wanted to find out how deep these Floating Magnums swim so I made a small measuring device out of a couple pieces of steel rod. some thing electric cable and some tie-wrap tags. In our kibbutz swimming pool there are 2 ladders at the deep end that reach to the bottom of the pool - 4m. So I made this device so that I could clip it on to the ladder at whatever depth I chose, using the electric cable and tags for accurate measurements. I made the device with a half meter boom sticking out at right angles covered in plastic tubing (so as not to damage the trebles) and then retrieved the 7 and 9 Magnums over it, changing the depths, until they got caught on the boom. Success They both hit the boom at 1.2m but not at 1.5m. This was using similar distances as in the Rapala Tackle Box Guide.

One of the best tools I have found is the "Precision Trolling" handbook - or the trollers bible by Mark Romanack. Although the book covers dive curves for trolling - it can be very handy to see which lures dive deeper than others.
It also matters if the lure is finely tuned and as mentioned in a previous post, the speed of retrieve. I have found that during the first 10 to 20 feet of retrieve that the slower I reel, without going too slow - allowing the lure to rise, the deeper a lure will dive initially.
Hope this helps!
