A great tip for you muskie and pike fisherman in the states... I deadbait for pike from time to time, mackerel is a great bait, but there is something even better. Lamprey. Lamprey is a jawless sea eel, it is absolutely jam packed with blood, which for obvious reasons goes down a storm with pike, and even chub and perch every now and then. My biggest pike (19lb 10oz) was caught on lamprey, along with my biggest perch, which was also my best ever fish of roughly 3lb. I use half a lamprey, although they can be used whole, which is probably better suited for the muskies. Just remember to slice the skin to let the blood out. Mount them on snap tackle (a wire trace with 2 trebles), and i prefer to use a big float on mine. Give it a try, its great stuff (it stinks like nothing else on the planet though)

Sounds great and I know just where I would use it but I can't think of a place where I could get lamprey in ohio. I have only tried muskie fishing with dead bait once and it was with bluegill, and didn't have much luck.

Just please keep in mind that they are an invasive (in the US and Canada) and very harmful species to fish and are very hardy. Please only use them for bait if they are dead and preserved store-bought or in the same body of water you caught them. Don't transport live lamprey. I'm not trying to be a stickler, I'm just trying to help prevent further spread.
