I have a Shakespeare Ugly Stick brand rod. I was wondering if I would want to go fish in the ocean, would I need a different rod? I'm pretty sure I would need a new reel. What brands do you recommend?

It would depend on what kind of ocean fishing you intend to do. If you like inshore fishing, fishing from the rocks or pier/jetty and your primary method would be stickbaits, then you can't go far wrong with an Abu Garcia Inshore Revo combo. The reel is specifically designed for saltwater fishing and is a very nice piece of equipment. It is also ideal for inshore fishing from a boat.
If stickbaits are your forte then you will have to remember that throwing anything above 28g (1oz) is going to get tiring pretty quick.

when i lived in Florida (10 +) years I tried out several combos and found a company called Star Rods that I still own 3 of their poles. They come with a lifetime warranty and made specifically for the harsh enviroment of salt water. I also found that Penn reels hold up very nicely provided you give them a good freshwater rinse after a day on the ocean. Finn-Nor makes real nice salt reels too. A little known company call Tica makes real nice reels but I have never physically tried one (yet).

oh ok. good stuff! So I think I will just fish off of the beach. I was looking at the brands that you guys said and it seems like I would spend around $200 more or less for a new one. Does that sound right? I will definately hunt on craigslist and eBay too. : )

If your only doing this once in while, I probably wouldn't recommend what i did, but if your going to fish in the Ocean alot, you want something built to stand up to the elements and last a while. I would recommend a real long pole for surf casting from the beach, long stick baits or live bait, and good sunscreen

Ok cool! I prolly won't do alot of ocean fishing unless I get to move to the ocean soon, which I'm hoping for. : ) I'm going to keep my eye out for these things now though during my craigslist searches. : )
