This might sound like a stupid title but it all depends on how one looks at it. For you guys that sit on a nice boat and can either troll or throw a lure a matter of a few meters then you have such a huge choice of lures. Me, I'm shore bound on a slow sloping sea bed with the maximum depth available of about 4m - and that is from the rocks or breakwater. The [decent] fish only come close to shore very early in the mornings (cold winter morning that is) and head back out to deep water as soon as the sun starts to get up. So, getting back to my 'Ultimate Lure', I'm still trying to find it. I tried the MaxRap - pretty good especially for it's weight - if only the 13 weighed another 10g I haven't tried the 15 yet and probably won't as it is just too expensive..... What I need is a floating shallow runner that casts a mile Actually the discontinued LC12 is very good but tends not to be consistent in the wind. So far my best all-round lure, although a bit on the large side, is the Daiwa SP Minnow. That thing casts like a bullet even into the wind and outcasts everything else I have. Shame they don't make a smaller version. I bought a couple of Yo-Zuri Mag Darter 5 28g and am waiting for them to arrive to test them. They are meant to cast very well and also have a great action. Life is fun - I'm off to our long stretch of grass now with a tape measure and a handful of lures to re-test their casting distances - with only a couple of hours of fishing time a daybreak I don't want to waste time changing lures....

Don't know how well it would work in saltwater but my favorite long casting, shallow running Rapala is the Fat 01. Again, I'm not even sure if it would work for the species of fish you are targeting, but I figured throwing my two cents in couldn't hurt. Good luck on your Ultimate Lure search!!!

I actually have a Fat 01 and yes they do cast pretty good. I've yet to try it over and around the reefs - I'm waiting for the spring for that - but I really bought it for catfish in the summer evenings....

You should try the fox rage fat willy, it is not a minnow lure, but it has got a long cast system and a superb action. It comes in 2 sizes (3.5cm & 5cm), and 5 or 6 different colours. I don't know if that's the kind of thing you're looking for, but in my eyes its worth a try. I got mine from harrissportsmail.com , who also do good deals on loads of stuff that you might be interested in, for example daiwa db minnows, maxraps, yo zuri crystal minnows, etc.

I am often dreaming of a new lure design. a oversized J-11 (about 12,5 cm) with the slow rise of the flatrap and the very shallow running lip of the DT-2. in the bleeding hot olive collor, and to be very special, make it clackin' !

Perhaps we could run a competition for designing 'The Ultimate Lure'. I know that Rapala has some very good professionals and all but us end users know what we want. Obviously there is a lot of difference of opinion depending on fishing circumstances, places and target species; but perhaps we could have several different categories. I know that for us shore based sea anglers a long casting shallow running lure that's not too big is what we're after (excluding those that love to use heavyweight pencils and poppers).

the ultimate lure for me would be as large as possible, but at the same time as light as possible. It would be slow sinking, to allow me to get down to the fish, but not so quickly that i end up snagging up all the time. the type of lure would probably be like a storm softlure, the swimbait sort not a jig, ive never done very well by jigging, most my fish on jigs have been caught winding it straight back rather than actually jigging it.

I think I can say the Ultimate lure is a Rapala J-11 BHO !!! this is about the 20th fish I caught on this particular lure. now it has been damaged a bit I allready bought myself a new one but I won't use the new one untill this one is completely trashed... to the bitter end it is!! This pike even distroyed my steal leader

I have to be honest to say that I use the thinnest leaders I can find. this makes the nutral boyancy of husky jerks really come to life.
This leader was allready damaged a bit because i caught about 5 or 6 pikes with it.
If you call this big, I will search for the pic of a really big pike i caught on a dead mackerel.

WOW, thats huge! My biggest pike is 19lb 10oz, we weigh fish over here instead of measuring them. We fish much the same tactics and baits, my favourite deadbait is mackerel too! I like to chop the head off mine to let more blood and oils into the water, next time you go deadbaiting give it a try (thats if you don't do it already) Also, have you tried using lamprey?

I use Poon also,.. Red ones Funny I mostly stab the mackerel a couple of times for the same reason. scary enough I find pleasure in stabbing with the knife..

I've never even heard of poon. Most people here use stuff like herring, mackerel, sardines, lamprey, sprats and roach. I find mackerel and lamprey best.

I think I'm getting there..... So far the best casting (consistent long casts) and also good action, are the Daiwa Salt Pro Minnow (15cm, 32g -- 42m on my set-up) and the Yo-Zuri Mag Darter - both versions - the 12.5cm, 28g -- 42m and the 10.5cm, 19g -- 39m. The Rapala LC12 is also a great caster and great action but it is somewhat inconsistent when casting if there is a little bit of wind blowing -- it upsets it in flight and then it doesn't achieve the normal 40m that it's capable of.
Since we are starting the 'Little Tuny' (a bit like a fat mackerel) season, I bought a couple of Abu Kosters -- a 28g one and an 18g one -- respectively 51m and 44m -- quite long casts! They do get a bit tiring though as you have to retrieve them fairly fast.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of fish at the moment so I'm still waiting to find out about the above lures catching abilities.....................

that lure is destroyed!!! (well, those fishes are great too!!!) btw: the longest casting lures i know about are the "filibustiere" and "tramviere" italian lipless. they are similar (bot are lipless minnows), but different in style... the "filibustiere" is smaller, compact and lighter, like a bullet. the other one is bigger but heavier. they cost a lot and are difficult to find except in a small zone, but work great tramviere and filibustiere

wow, thats a big old fish. I've never seen a pike chew through a steel trace though. I had one giant old pike cut right through one of mine. It was getting a little old but it was still a good quality leader. Lost one of those nice big storm plastic wildeye pike lures because of it. somewhere in the belly of a giant pike
