i ask this question bcuz i dont want crap fishing line in my tackle bag!! i hate iron silk, i got berkley iron silk years ago in solar mint for the colour and the price. ($8.99 for 300 yards) it was nice at first. but then the problems began. the line was lacking in the "iron" and "silk" names. i lost alot of good Rapalas that year.. and it wasnt from having too tight of a drag setting either. and the "low memory" characteristic of the line was if you left your line on your reel for too long with no action it would be all coily even in 8lb test. the knot strength was very very poor if anything. my advise is stick with a line that has worked for you for years!! looking forward to your feedback. -mick-

actually, looking at the posts already on this thread, it seems like berkley fishing lines have popped up a few times already. I have only ever fished 2 berkley lines, which couldn't be less alike. As i have already said, berkley big game snaps every time you get a fish on, which for pike can mean death. On the other hand, at christmas i got some berkley vanish fluorocarbon, which is worth its weight in gold. It is very strong, and is really smooth, meaning i can cast way further than i ever could with the mono which i used on the same reel. The mono i used to use is actually very good though, it is extremely strong and affordable (It was daiwa sensor)

over the years i have usually used berkley triline XL. the triline XT is nasty stuff to work with and just loves to wad up. one of my favorites was the berkley professional, came in a gold box, and came in either a dark green or a photochromic gold color. it was the precurser to the stuff they have now that they say changes color underwater. that stuff was good line. but in the last few years i have been using cajun red line. makes me laugh a little to think that im back to using Shakespeare line, but this isnt the cheap 1000yd for a buck stuff you used to see. the Cajun stuff is really nice line. i have not made the switch back to braid fully yet, i have used some powerpro, which is good, and i think the new suffix 832 is going to be very nice. i jumped right on the band wagon when fireline first hit the shelves. came in black, but they called it smoke, which i think they meant that it had been smoked. everytime you handled the stuff, it would turn your hands all black and sooty. a combination of youth, inexperience with baitcasters, a cheap ass abu reel, and having bought too light of line, basically meant that the $25 i spent on that spool of line was wasted in lil clumps of line that had to be cut off of the reel with a scissors. that stuff just cut right into the spool and made a huge mess. ive been told that it has gotten better, but i just dont know. i learned later to never go light on braided line, if you use 8lb normally, i buy the 8lb dia line, usually like 25 or 30lb braid. the smaller dia line has more of a tendincy to cut in. always us a substantial mono backing. and know how to prevent backlashes from happening, cause if they do, its still messy and expensive.

I'm amazed that nobody has mentioned Power Pro - it is by far the most popular braid for lure fishing here in the UK and I would recommend it highly.
I never lure fish with mono, so wouldn't want to comment

IMO any mono just plain blows lol the fact that a 3lb bass can sink himself into some weeds causing me to lose a $10 rapala on 12 lb test just keeps me away from it everytime. I use nothing but spiderwire stealth braid (been using it 4+ years) and it has never failed me. The stealth on my one rod is about 2-3 years old (and catches fish quite often) and it still performs like new. Hardly any backlashes and the 50lb test never breaks. (I even haul logs in with it )

Berkley Vanish= It is named accordingly as that is what happens to your lure anytime you hook anything "it vanishes". Big Game is one of my favorites and besides a little to much memory it is as good as any other mono I have tried.

I haven't really found a line that I hate. I think the nail was hit on the head when it was said different lines for different reels. For example I hate using cajun line on a baitcaster due to the high memory, but it works great on my surf & big game spinning reels. Amen to the black fingers when using fireline smoke. You would think that would have been an issue during field testing. Maybe they just don't care. I used Berkley superbraid on my round baitcasters for years and loved it. Now they don't make it. I have switched to Suffix 832 and it is working well. Vanish has been working very well for me also. Something to watch for when purchasing mono. Look for its location within the shop in reference to the windows. If it is too close to the window it will be exposed to UV and cause it to go brittle. I once went into a tackle shop and saw that his bulk spools were directly exposed to sunlight. That can't be good. I have a commercial spooler and do all my own spooling. I store all my bulk spools either in shaded areas or in a cabinet. I also use reel covers on most of my fishing reels. Protects the reel and the line.

For walleye fishing I use 1. Berkley sensation #6 for casting light jigs 1/32 up to 1/2 oz. 2. Berkley Vanish for my normal trolling cranks/spinners. I use 12# as it is close to the same diameter as XT (precision trolling book uses). Vanish has a lot of different properties than most monos (slow sinks & low stretch). This allows a bait to get deeper and not have the reverse dive curve. 3. Berkley Fireline #10 for casting cranks and vertical jigging rivers. I use a 18" mono leader and have never had problems with this line 4. A lot of other lines that have very special purposes (#4 fireline to gain more depth, 40# big game to have less gain).
No one line is perfect for all situations. Multiple setups with different lines/combo is the best way to go. I would never troll w/ #6 and cast with 40# but they all have a place in the boat.

shimano blue wing 8# (0.25 mm). i still have it somewhere around here. yes, it looked very nice - but its breaking strenght was horribly low!!! after a few line breaks, i decided to leave it on a box.

I tried Sufix in 4 lb test monofilament for ultralight applications and it was a total disaster; kept breaking all the time! I know a lot of people like Sufix, so maybe I got a bad spool. I threw away the spool and went to Stren Magnathin, which is absolutely phenomenal!
