A couple of threads of mine regarding rapala lures that i and others have never had any luck on (namely the clackin'rap and skitter prop posts) seem to have attracted a lot of interest, so i figured i would start another thread. Today i had my first take on a risto rap, leaving just one of the models of rapala i own to have never had so much as a sniff, the floating magnum. All my other rapalas have had atleast a take or follow in one size or colour.
So, what rapala lures have you guys never had any luck on?

- Original Floating (just never happened on em) WHAT? In the last 3 weeks alone, i've landed 1 fish, had about half a dozen come off, and about 20-30 follows, all to my F18FT. Give em another go, you want the real large sizes though, the best one being the F18. I seem to have got really unlucky with fish coming off though As for the clackin' rap, thats been the second best lure for me recently, behind the F18, which is really weird, my best lures are your worst ones, and we both fish almost exactly the same.

Mine are the taildancer and minnow rap. I understand the tail dancer being tough, as I primarily fish for bass in shallow water, two things the tail dancer is not intended for. The MR drives me nuts though. It works for Ted, who only lives 2hrs away from me, so it certainly works for the type of fish in my area. I really like the movement of it, I have it in some of the colors I know work on other Rapalas, yet I get nothing!!!! Definitely gonna work to conquer that thing this year!!

Tail Dancers and Minnow Raps have never really produced much for me?

Steve, i have done reasonably well on my XR08GGH, although its not exactly a killer for pike, it does work. Due to its size though, i've only ever caught small 'jack' pike on it. It seems funny how patterns start to emerge on threads like this, and the minnow rap seems to be popping up a few times. I will be a bit weary of buying a minnow rap now simply because of the amount of people who have already said they've never done any good on it

Good luck, i will probably be going fishing tommorow. I just remembered that i never had any fish on my redhead sliver, which i no longer own because i got it snagged. To be honest though, that was at the time when i was just starting out, and i wasn't very experienced (it was the first rapala i ever bought ). I also never caught anything on my DTFSS07 PGS, although i only had like 2 casts with it before i got it snagged, so i won't count that one. As you can imagine, i was very pissed off that day!

Let me know how you get on with it! I will use my F18FT tommorow and let you know how i do. The F18 is pretty much the perfect lure for me, weighing 21gr, it suits my 5-25gr lure rod perfectly, being around 7 inches in length, it is quite substantial (pike love big baits), it casts quite well (unlike the smaller sizes of original floaters), and most importantly, its got that great wounded minnow action that all predatory fish LOVE!!! The only downside for me is that often the length of the lure can provide leverage for the hooks to work their way out when the fish shakes about. I first read up on the so called leverage effect about a year ago, and tbh, i thought it was a load of bullsh*t, but judging by the amount of fish that have come off during the fight on my F18, it looks like its true.

i'm using a greys grx spin, the best rod i've ever used. Honest to God, i bought it about 3 or 4 years ago, and i've never been fishing since and not used it, except when fishing abroad, or the 2 times i went fly fishing.

I've been using the same Shakespeare Equaliser 9ft 8 - 28gr spinning rod for over 12 years! To bad I had to replace the rod last december. I bought something that came as close as possible to my old rod. must say that the Shimano Technium is very good and is almost the same but unfortunatly with a faster action. This action is in fact better for my way of fishing. gues I just have to live with that.

Mine would have to be the Skitter Prop. I've thrown it several times...maybe had a fish swirl on it a time or two. Just dont't have a lot of personal confidence in.

On recomendation of Tom I bought a F13SB and today I caught a pike on it, my first actual catch on the Original Floater, Thanks Tom! Well done - that is surprising since the OF always seems to be the one that gets folks hooked on them in the first place. For me I think it was the F-9 or F-11 in Gold. From now on when nothing else works usually the F-13 in Silver always comes through...

Congratulations Kees, and no problem. Stick with it, thats the first fish of many on your original floater, i assure you. Next step is an F18 lol. Next time i go to Spain, i'll have a look for more colours, and if they have more F18 firetigers, i can buy you 1 maybe? I'm not sure what gen firetiger mine is, but its identical to the one in my pic, is this rare?

I have to be honest with you Tom, I am still not too confident with the OF. In my opinion the lure barely has a wiggle, almost no action. I was very suprised I got a bite cause I was not expecting to catch on it at all. I will use it again though... I dont give uo that easy I am curious for the F18 Note that I caught 6 pikes today, 3 on a X-rap, 2 on a Flat Rap and 1 on the F13.

6 pike in a day! Thats a great day out fishing here, in fact, the best day out piking i have ever had was 7 in a day. Also, the reason why the original floater doesn't look like its wiggling much is because it rolls instead of going from left to right. For this reason it is hard to see the action from above, but from the side it is much easier to see, which is why fish love it. If you watch the eyes as it wiggles, you will see what i mean, by watching the eyes you see just how much the lure rolls. I'm afraid the F18 doesn't wiggle anywhere near as quickly as the smaller sizes. the difference between my F07 and F18 when reeled in at the same speed is unbelievable, but the fish still love to chew on F18s.

Yes, 6 pikes made it a good day fishing, I had 2 friend with me, we caught 10 pikes in total. Like I said, I will try it again. I noticed it is good for really shallow situations.

Today i caught a nice pike of about 5-6lbs on my... Floating magnum!!!! About 10 feet out it just hammered it, i reeled it in at a solid medium-fast retrieve, and i felt a wham then my rod hooped round. The Belly treble was hooked cleanly on the inside of the mouth, so there's no chance it was a foul hooked fish, although the rear treble was outside the mouth so i had to hand land it. This means that the only model of rapala in my box thats had no interest from the pike is my skitterpop i just bought, and i don't think you can count that seeing as i have only used it once, and its still only february...

Tom wait until the weather is hot and then use the skitter pop just over the weeds in the water. you'll be suprised by the way pike are slamming the skitter pop from out of the waterplants.
