What's the deal with the old silver plated Husky Jerks? I know that's kind of a vague question, but, I guess I'm just looking for any insight or information all you Rapala Gurus have on them. I saw a tennesse shad silver plated going for 20 bucks on ebay. And I know for a fact I can get two of these 2marow if I wanted to, should I pick them up? I can also get several old silver plated Husky Jerks with the gold sticker on the lid, are these worth picking up? Im asking vague questions but I'm in need of a good old fashion Rapala history lesson on Silver plated Husky Jerks.

Its a great bait still for sale I dont see the huskey jerks with the silver plate going away. I think people would storm Rapala. Great fall trolling bait love the hj12 plan to use the HJ10 this spring. Gold's my number one color then clown.

the silver plated lures were released back around the early mid 90's if i remember right. the first year or so they had the stickers on the lid, genuine silver plated, the stickers soon disappeared, but the boxes on some still read silver plated. the problem with plateing, silver or otherwise, is that it is an inferior surfacing, and if you had some of these early silver lures, you know what im talking about. sometimes you see lures listed as gold plated, rapala never plated gold, unless in prototype, but even then i doubt it, they did silver plate with goldish tinted silver thou. silver used to be cheap, not so much now, i would be surprised if the current TSD, CLN, S husky jerks or others that were once silver plated now have little or no silver at all and instead zinc or nickle or other metal. as far as old lures with the sticker being collectable or not, if i have the chance to add a lure to the collection that has the sticker compared to one that doesnt, i go for the sticker, and im sure one day they will do ok with collectors. plus im sure somewhere there is someone looking for those older silverplated one because they feel that they will catch fish while the new ones will not, i dont buy it, but im not the one writing the check.
just my feelings bacon

Bacon, you hit it on the nose with a sledge hammer. I chuckled while I read that cause I was thinking "how did he know how to answer those questions".....lol.
Im 22 years old, so I don't know any of these little facts about Rapala from the 90's, I started fishing tournaments with my dad in 2001, and from then on, I followed Rapala closely, I was a little Rapala freak even back then. I used to dig through my dad's boat and pull his Lures out just to look at them.
Thanks for all the information fellas, I'm gonna go back to that tackle shop and get every old Silver Plated Husky Jerk he has, I'll post some pics on this thread. I think alot of them are the size 14. Thanks for the history lesson Bacon and thank everybody who posted.

Yes, the small shops are where you will find your rare still in box Rapala lures. If you don't mind me asking, where are you from? I have this theory that Rapala collecting and buying discontinued lures hasn't caught on in the south yet.

I don't think that is true Jake.... We are in Texas.

I'm sorry, what I meant was like Lower North Carolina, S.Carolina, Georgia, Bama, etc. I should have said "Southeast". I think the southeast has less people that would get interested in looking for Discontinued Rapalas, because fishing is good year round so they're just looking for whatever they need to catch fish... know what I mean? I have seen E-bay listing from Texas, but I have yet to see one from any of the states I listed. Tennesse is the closest state that I've seen people with lots of Discontinued lures.... so when I go "hunting" I head south and east.
Sometimes I don't explain myself fully when I make posts because I'm in a hurry and it makes me look stupid, lol.

One time I bought 50 Fat Raps from a guy in KY. Saw a listing and called him up. Maybe KY has some good stuff?

Could be. I know there's a load of tackle shops up there. It wouldn't be that far of a drive for me to hit up the southeastern part of Kentucky. I haven't seen too many listing from Kentucky so that's a good sign.

I have to laugh not at what is being said but what it reminds me of. My wife and I used to travel looking for antiqes. Here in North Carolina if you asked "where are the best antiques?" You would get the reply "Pennsylvania". We go to Penn. and ask Where are the best antiques? They said NC! I bet the same would be true of Rapalas. I travel between Minnesota and North Carolina every year and I seem to find more in Mn. than in NC. My theory is that here in the Southeast the shops don't stock nearly as much Rapala as they do in the Northern climates. Partly because there is so much concentration on the Saltwater market. I do agree that the smaller shops are where you stand a better chance of a real find. Although alot of the smaller shops are struggling now. Two have closed in my area recently. I hate to see that happening.

Yeah, that sucks. I'm sure the people that own these small places have dreams of living off of Fishing Retail and then it just doesn't work out, gas prices and restrictions on where people can fish are killing "fishing only" type stores... the only thing we're gonna have left is Wal-Mart with the most bland and common colors. Anyway, I guess I could have it all wrong, maybe the reason all the Ebay listing are up from Northern States is because they just have more Rapalas up there. I was thinking with the way bass fishing is in the southeast that Rapalas (Especially Crankbaits) would be more plentiful.... I mean 1 out of 3 people down here are serious anglers, and 3 out of 3 people own Original Floaters, serious angler or not........lol. I suppose Bass Pro Shops has been busy with online orders the last 20 years from people down here. I guess the only way to settle this is to gas up the Cobalt, grab a six pack of Red Bull, and hit I-40. I'll let ya know how it works out

Here in NE it seems like people are not into collecting lures or not good at it. The two locally owned shops have a great selection and no takers. These guys that own the shops in town and the surronding area love me. It seems like the guys here do pretty well. I love the little shops its alot more personal. The prices are the same or better as well.

Same here creature, I've been cleaning out my little hometown, hole-in-the-wall, outdoors shack for the last two months. I knew the guy pretty well before he opened the shop, I sat down with him and told him all the bass fishing essentials he would need to stock and he wrote it down and ordered it. He ended up with most of his Rapala selection by buying big bulk stocks of lures from surrounding tackle stores, things that they had overstock of. I bought his last CD-11 today, and that's the end of his discontinued Rapalas.... Creature, do any of your local shops have any #5 Risto Raps? If you could get your hands on those I would love to send you about 50 bucks in an envelope to pick me up some....

I will check on some Risto Rap action. Both shops have lots of old CD-11 stuff in lots of colors. I'm after CD's in the first firetiger pattern. They look hand painted compared to the 2 and 3ed version.

Yeah they do, I always buy the first gen. Firetiger lures whenever I see them. The 3rd gen. Firetiger looks awful to me. I think I've got a couple 1st gen. firetiger CD's but they're the #5, lemme know if you want them and I'll get them to you. If you're interested in husky jerks or Original floaters in the original firetiger I can get you some of those.... no CD's though.
Yeah if you don't mind checking for #5 Ristos that would be great, seems like I can find everything but #5's...... arggggg
