Well, my dad and I decided to give it a try this morning. One end of the lake opened up while 3/4 of it is still iced over. We fought ice chunks and flows but ended up with a decent pike...28" and a 6.5lbs Walleye. I couldn't help but feel like we were on the Titanic with all of the ice everywhere. We caught both fish in about 25 fow on a HJ-12 YP with a split shot about 3' above the lure. 110' back behind planer boards. A couple of hours into fishing, the ice started to break up and we decided to call it a day. We didn't want the launch to get blocked up with ice so we couldn't get the boat out. All in all, not a bad first trip of the year. I'm pretty happy with the new YP pattern. I am going to have to pick up a few more sometime soon. I looked on cabelas and aparently there were 6 different size husky jerks made..... I think someone messed up. If I ordered some of the HJ-12 YP in the 1/3 oz, I wonder if I would even get them, or if they would be 7/16oz. They have the rest of the HJ-12 at 7/16 oz. Its not a big difference, but does anyone know what the deal is?

I had to take a picture of a picture. My camera uses a XD card and my computer only holds SD cards. Sorry about the quality. She's still swimming

No, I let her go. She's going to lay a bunch of eggs here within the next couple of months. I usually only keep males under 18 inches to eat. I usually catch plenty during the year between 15-18 inches to keep my freezer stocked, that I don't need to keep any others. I think the smaller ones taste better anyway

totally agree Matt, the smaller ones taste much better.
the thing here is, with the walleyes big brother, the ZANDER we have a minimum size of 20 in. so they are still very good eating, but i usually get very few each year. no way of even thinking about of filling a freezer with zander.
when we were camped out for a week on lac la croix back when i was young we were virtually living for a full week on walleye (besides some steaks and burgers ...). and i may say it was me who caught the first meal with walleye for the full gang of 7 back then.
just hope to go back to a place where you can catch lots of the smaller ones, and a few big ones sometime ...
best, w.
