Knowing that there are [meant to be] Spanish mackerel (very sharp teeth) near the shore this time of year I got to thinking about leader material. I should of course go with the knottable AWF Surflon Supreme but it's quite expensive. So I was thinking about using a 30Lb braid (low-vis green -- fishing in low light conditions) on 20Lb Sufix 832 Neon Lime. Which knot would be the best to connect them and would the 30Lb braid be sufficient to ward off the sharp teeth of the Spanish mackerel?

I catch Spanish in the surf here in North Carolina. They have not arrived yet. I use as thin a steel leader as possible to deal with those razor sharp teeth. I don't see why braid wouldn't work, but I would sure check it closely after every fish. Just a nick from those teeth and your leader would be compromized. Something else I have used is 50 lb. fluorocarbon. Thick enough to take a hit from the teeth and still offers low visibility.

Forgot to mention the knot. I use a blood knot to connect or I will use a small ball bearing swivel depending on the lure I'm using.

i never use leaders i think it makes the lure not work right john. Interesting. I was wondering if Low Vis green braid would perhaps spook the fish. Most of the time the [sea] water where I fish is crystal clear, so I was thinking about staying with a mono leader although truthfully, I would much prefer not having to use a leader as a knotless line passing through the rod guides will cast farther.

Do you fish in clear water conditions or stained/colored? I will have to try some experiments the next time the sea is smooth enough to see what the Low Vis green looks like in the water. I did actually get some permanent marker pens and colored the first meter with a sort of camo effect using black, red and brown plus of course the original Low Vis green. Anybody want to lend me their bath tub? - We don't have one, only a shower and that doesn't work too well for testing lures Nigel

I always use steal leaders, the thinest/lightest I can find.
The lure still works great and it prevented me from loosing lures a couple of times.

I was searching on Google for other folk's thoughts and some of them were quite sensible. One of the main reasons for a leader, when using braid, is that if you try to lift a fish out of the water by grabbing hold of the line braid will slice through you hand like a hot knife through butter whereas if you have a leader of fluorocarbon or steel then you don't have that same problem. Obviously the other main reasons were for visibility issues. Most folks saying that in stained water green braid or, in deeper water, red is perfectly OK. But in clear water a fluorocarbon leader is best and at a minimum of 30" +/- . They also were saying that fish like bass, when not finicky, will strike at anything that passes them and a visible line will not deter them. A couple of folks were saying that they never use a leader and have caught loads of fish using braid. So, I suppose it all depends on the fishing situation..... Nigel

I've gone out deep sea fishing quite a few times. They will troll dead ribbon fish right below the surface. Only using 50+ lb test line. No kind of leader. We have caught many many many 40+ in Mackerel AKA King Fish.
I usually always used dark green braided line / spider wire growing up becuase I would tend to get hung up a lot. No leader. Never got cut up , usually had good luck catching fish...
It may just be a personal preference.

I managed to cut myself using braid just pulling a knot tight Learned my lesson and now I use rubber gloves before pulling the knots tight I don't fancy lifting a king or Spanish out of the water just grabbing hold of the braid though without a pair of gloves on.

I have always like the Berkley Steel on Steel leaders. The run 1.99 per 3 pack. They come in black and have a nice coating on the outside.

I dont think line visibility really makes as much of a difference as people think. Maybe if you were using hot pink line and jigging for walleyes it might, but we are dealing with fish here (who really are not that smart, think about it they bite lures that look like nothing they have saw before and in colors they have not saw before). I fish 50lb green braid with a swivel for bass/northern and 85lb green braid for musky (I know its not the same species of fish but this is the colest I can get). I always catch as many fish as the people I fish with (and a lot of the times I catch more than them).
