Although not caught on a Rapala (I did try a few honestly) here is a pic of the 50cm Barracuda that I caught this morning: Barracuda on a Daiwa Saltiga Minnow 14 And another pic of it in the water (it was so long I couldn't get all of it in the photo by holding it): And, last of all, a stitched pic of the place where I caught it: Reefs at Tel Michmoret, Israel The place is real nice and I will be going there more often Nigel

nice location!!!! you should try the MaxRap over there!!! I have Problem with the MaxRap is that it is kind of unpredictable. It is 13cm and weighs only 15g. It does cast OK except in gusty/windy conditions which cause it to suddenly turn over on itself mid-flight and therefore falls short. The Daiwa Saltiga Minnow 12, which has the same profile as the MaxRap, is slightly smaller and at 12g a touch lighter, but it does not suffer the same problems as the MaxRap does in those gusty conditions. The Daiwa Saltiga Minnow 14 (it's actually 14.5cm) weighs 19g and casts like a bullet even into the wind. It is rather expensive but worth it. I'll try the MaxRap again on a calmer day. Fishing on the reefs there one really needs a real shallow swimmer as there are some reefs just under the surface and I wouldn't want to snag a lure on them. Nigel

Ok, funny, I find the maxrap a heavy lure but that is just because I fish very light..

Ok, funny, I find the maxrap a heavy lure but that is just because I fish very light.. Yes, I suppose it is a relative thing. During the winter and spring I need the heavier lures for the distance - still trying to catch me a Spanish Mackerel Come June I will probably switch mostly to my ultralight gear and fish closer to the rocks and reefs. I really like the CD-1 - only 2.7g but casts very well; the CD-5 is also a great lure for around the reefs. Nigel

Nigel looks like a great place to try some F MAG 9 and 11s Sure looks like it I actually tied on an X-Rap 10 to test the depth of the underwater reefs and it seemed OK. Just got to watch the swell as it changes the depth of water by a considerable amount. On a clear calm day, and when there isn't too much swell, or breaking waves it is easier to see where those underwater reefs are and to be able to cast in and around them - bit tricky in the dark though Nigel

hi nigel is that you standing in the photo and i love the photos and great job john No, not me in the photo - I was behind the camera. The guy in the photo is one of those (the vast majority of people that catch fish - I don't want to use the word 'angler') that uses a pole, no reel, a small bobber and a couple of baited hooks but set up in a way that they mostly foul hook the [very] small fish (and they keep them). It doesn't bother me too much as mostly the fish caught are an invasive species from the Red Sea (via the Suez Canal). If you look closely at the photo (of the reefs) you can make out the submerged pathway connecting the small rock outcrops which gets you out to the flat reef - a bit tricky in low light conditions Nigel

Nigel, hey, congratulations! Maybe that could be the problem at some of your other locations - too many barracudas? Those things make my pickerels seem like carp LOL

Nigel, hey, congratulations! Maybe that could be the problem at some of your other locations - too many barracudas? Those things make my pickerels seem like carp LOL I don't think so - they don't get much bigger than that - - "Hold the press!" I just checked my fishes book and the one I caught is the Yellowmouth barracuda (Sphyraena viridensis) and it grows to a max of 70cm BUT, there is another one - the European barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena) which gets up to a very decent 160cm. Maybe I'll catch one of the big ones next time? Nigel
