I retired from law enforcement after 30 years service and now I am living a dream. I'm in Minnesota working at a fishing resort!! This was going to be a test drive to see if I wanted to buy into the resort. I have found out that working at a resort is hard work. I don't mind hard work but it convinced me that I didn't want to buy into it. I was a little naive about what it takes to run a resort. Putting out the docks and boat lifts. Maintaining all the boats, de-winterizing the cabins, fixing broken plumbing and wiring, rebuilding decks, and keeping the guests happy. I think I will be content to be just a working stiff and fishing guide. Great working conditions. I wake to the sound of crying loons. I watch a bald eagle fly over and snatch a fish from the lake. I fish for muskie, walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, perch, sunnies... The weather is not nearly as hot as it is back in North Carolina. This has been a dream of mine for a long time and I have not been disappointed. I am also blessed to have such an understanding wife that understands and allows me to pursue my dream without static.

Sweet I hope to find a job like that when I am older. Sounds like the perfect job! What resort do you work at? I'll be in MN in about 2 weeks. Maybe close by? I'm not sure where anything is though, I am from Texas.

I'm at Sand Bay Resort in NW Minnesota. In a small town named Battle Lake. The resort is on the banks of West Battle Lake. A 5600 acre clear water lake.

This is exactly what I want to do, except I am going to college this year, lol. Having a good stable job then retiring from that and becoming a fishing guide. I am envious.

Well the summer is over and I have returned to NC. Really great to see the wife and daughter again. Even though I had a wonderfull summer, the only down side was being away from them. This has truly been a summer to remember. Met some really nice people. Caught lots of fish! Found some nice old Rapalas and bought some neat fishing collectables. Finished working at the resort and my cousin asked me to come and work the sugar beet harvest. Sure, I'm always up for a new experience. Had some fun and came home with a little $$ in my pocket. Also brought home a surprise for the wife. She really likes old trucks. Well I found a 1950 Ford F-1 in really good condition for a good price. The wife really likes it! This summer will be a hard act to follow. Going fishing in Florida next week. I highly recommend this retirement stuff!

Congrats Omigosh! I have fished the area you are talking about - awesome area! I bet you did a little snap jigging with spottails?
Do what you love to do and you will never work a day in your life! (I believe Confucius?)
Cheers!

hi all.
for anybody out there planning to set up a fishing lodge, read Ted Gerken s >Gamble at Iliamna< and you will be cured. it only seems to work with a very good retirement pay and a lot of money on the side; and even then it is nothing but a gamble. but it does not hurt to dream on ...
best, wolfgang
