I caught a few perch a few weeks back, which is a fish I don't catch very often. I noticed a bunch of small blue dots on both of them, but thought it was just a perch thing. Today though, I caught a bass with the same blue dots. They looked to be protruding out of the skin a tiny bit and were about the size of poppyseeds. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this, and was really hoping it isn't something detrimental to the health of the fish. I may have a pic or two in which they are visible, but am not on my home computer right now where they are saved. I'll try to post them later. Any info would be appreciated.

Can't be sure without actually seeing them, and even then I'm no expert, but I teach biology and environmental science, and have fairly extensive fish keeping experience, and from what you described it sounds like what is commonly known as "black spot". Real creative name I know, exactly what you called it in fact just by looking at it. Another possibility is fish lice. Black spot is a larval stage of a water fluke (small mud worm) that is usually not fatal. Fish lice are actual adult parasites that live in aquatic ecosystems and often do cause enough stress and cellular damage to the fish to cause death. It's tough to say what brings about outbreaks of either of these conditions, it could be a number of environmental factors in the particular ecosystem. Just my best guesses, hope that helps a little.

Here's a decent pic of what I am talking about. I haven't caught a single perch this year (only caught a handful) that hasn't had these spots.
