I recently started using sufix 832 which has been a great choice. 20 pound test at a 6 pound diameter, love it. I have been able to pull out many stuck lures with only a bent hook. Recently I was looking into getting a Pflueger Arbor reel and in my research I found some people talking about using mono backing when using braided line. I have found little on why one would use backing while using braided line. Anybody have the info???

I have found little on why one would use backing while using braided line. Anybody have the info??? Two main reason's I do it. One, that stuff is slippery. And if you dont have a secure hole or attachment point on your spool. It will often spin the whole winding of line right on the spool. The other reason, is for what you mentioned above. 20lb line at 6lb diameter. That stuff is pricey. Back your spool with some cheap Mono first so it doesnt take so much to fill up the spool. Depending on what your fishing for. You shouldn't need more than a couple hundred yards of braided.

The Arbor reel has some kind of rubberized material on the arbor would that eliminate the line slippage?? How much backing should be used. I like the idea of being able to use some filler. It would be cool to split the 150 yard spools between both spools that the Pflueger reels come with.

Use a dab of superglue where your backing meets your braid. And a dab where you connect your liter, too. Gives me added confidence...

I use mono backing too! Hi-Vis 17-lb Berkley XT Solar (Discontinued - now I would use Big Cat) and use a really small barrel swivel to join the two. Then I place half of the tape that came with the braid over the swivel on the spool. This keeps the union of the two lines strong (braid will cut into mono) and also allows me to rejoin quickly if I change lines.
When the braid gets a little worn - I spool it faded end first onto a different spool. Money goes twice as far that way.

Great advice, Happyshad... I prefer Power-Pro and braid is expensive, no matter what kind it is... Respooling saves money that you can spend on more Rapalas!!!
