Whenever the wind picks up and the water starts to get a bit choppy, I grab my XRaps and cast from docks into water I know is deep enough to keep from getting hung up. Sometimes the pads can be quite a ways from the dock, and I need some beef to get the lure at the edge of the pads. The tail really holds back the ability to cast in thw wind so I trimmed the tails on some and it really helped carry the bait further.
I'm would not say the design is bad. In fact, it has incredible action. I was just willing to sacrifice some of that action for travel distance.

...just a follow-up...
Casted a modified ( tail shortened ) XRap XR08 in Rainbow Trout pattern in the wind today at my local lake. It casts so much better now. After about 20mins, I hooked a small largemouth. I then headed off to work happy that these babies are still catching fish for me.

Kind regards Wijnand

I have not tried to cut off the tails completely. Too close to a husky jerk. I'd rather keep some difference there.
I've caught a handful of fish over the last two weekends with the shorter tails.
It really worked well the last two weekends when the water became choppy, causing the fish to surface less. When the winds subsided and the fish started to surface again, the byte on my xraps dropped off a bit...I could catch'em - but going back to the floater would cause a ton of hits and some fish in.
