Went fishing yesterday morning and, although I didn't catch anything - again, I saw several strange fish 'skipping' across the surface of the water. Well not exactly skipping but rather, with all their body out of the water except for the tail they seemed to run across the surface for about 25m (82 feet). The fish was slender and had a greenish appearance to its back and was about 20-30cm (8-12inches) in length. Any ideas what it might have been? This was in the Mediterranean Sea very close to the shore line over a sandy and rocky bottom.

We call them ladyfish here but they probably have a more scientific name. They are pretty annoying when you fish for reds and trout in the surf, but they put up a good fight.

We don't have the ladyfish in the Med so it must have been something else. Somebody sent me a photo of a cornetfish that they caught recently on the rocks of Tel Aviv - maybe it was that?? These photos are from the mexfish website: Cornetfish

We used to catch them along the South West coast of England back when I was there. Great fun to catch and, if you let them run a bit and then stop them, they will jump pretty good! How is the fishing in Cyprus? I always fancied fishing there Nigel

I always fancied fishing there Nigel After watching the YouTube clips and recalling my garfish catches in the UK, the fish I saw wasn't a garfish - it wasn't as thin nor did it have the beak of a garfish. Still looking... Nigel

I think I found out which fish it was. I asked one of the guys that goes spear fishing and said it was probably a Halfbeak (Hemiramphus far). He said that he sees quite a lot of them and, on a side note, are a great baitfish - Spanish mackerel love 'em. Nigel
